Recent Cooperstown graduate Philip Pohl earned Class C State Player of the Year honors in baseball for the second straight year, the New York State Sports Writers Association announced this past week.
Edmeston teammates Jordan Williams and Matt Laymon also received all-state accolades. Williams, a junior this past spring, made the first team in Class D. Laymon's senior season led to second-team honors in Class D.
All three area players were honored by The Daily Star as First Team All-Stars last weekend, which marked Pohl's second consecutive season as the newspaper's Player of the Year.
Pohl's teammate, Jim Fort, received a fourth-team spot in Class C. Fort, a pitcher who played first base and outfield, received a Daily Star honorable mention after going 7-2 on the mound this past season. Fort struck out 13 in a no-hitter April 8, when the Redskins topped Ilion, 3-0.
Primarily a catcher, Pohl batted .416 with four home runs, 26 RBIs and 25 runs as a senior. He'll play next season on a full scholarship for Division I Clemson University after turning down the Tampa Bay Rays, who selected him in the 44th round of Major League Baseball's First-Year Player Draft in June.
Pohl also won the Gatorade New York State Player of the Year award and appeared on the USA TODAY second team as a catcher. Pohl made 146 putouts and committed one error behind the plate. He also went 6-1 with a 1.47 ERA on the mound, striking out 63 in 38 innings.
Pohl led the Redskins to an 18-5 season that ended with a 1-0 loss to Pulaski in the Section Three Class C-1 final.
Over four varsity seasons, Pohl hit a Cooperstown-record 12 home runs. In 2007, he set single-season records for homers (five), RBIs (39) and steals (41).
Williams and Laymon helped Edmeston to a 20-3 season that included a 7-5 victory over Cooperstown, the Tri-Valley League championship and the Section Four Class D title.
Williams, a hard-throwing right-hander, went 6-1 with a 1.76 ERA. He struck out 83 in 55 2/3 innings. He also hit .288 with three home runs and 18 RBIs.
Laymon, a left-hander, went 11-1 with a 1.34 ERA, striking out 108 and walking 34 over 62 1/3 innings. At the plate, he hit .384 with a team-high five home runs and 28 RBIs. Laymon also hit six triples and walked 19 times.
