Cooperstown 5-year-old Benjamin Webster caught the biggest fish last Saturday during the 51st annual City of Oneonta Youth Fishing Derby at Hodges Pond in Neahwa Park.
Benjamin landed a 2.6-pound bass en route to the heaviest combined weight of the derby, which featured junior anglers ages 5-15. He finished at 2.91 pounds to win the 5-7 age-group.
Alyssa Quick placed first in the 8-11 age-group at 1.89 pounds, and Rachael Perry won ages 12-15 at 1.79 pounds. All three age-group winners received trophies from the Susquehanna Bass Association, which co-sponsored the derby with the City of Oneonta Recreation Department.

Burlington resident Tim Thompson won the right to represent Otsego County in the demolition derby at the New York State Fair last Thursday in Morris.
Thompson and Jerry Madsen of Laurens shared the feature title during the Total Destruction Demolition Derby, which drew a crowd of 2,000 to the Otsego County Fair's grandstand. Thompson then won a coin flip to advance to the State Fair.
Other heat winners Thursday were Dave Smith of Mount Upton, Scott Wright of Morris, Mark Walley of Cooperstown, Bob Dixon of Davenport, Mike Oliver of Davenport, Rob Harris of Edmeston and Jim Fowlston of Norwich. Maryland resident Chip Norton won the four-cylinder event.

Photographer Roger Freeman will speak about his National Baseball Hall of Fame photo exhibit at 1 p.m. Friday in the Bullpen Theater.
The exhibit features Freeman's black-and-white photos from around the New York-Penn League during the 1990s. Hall visitors can participate in the program at no additional cost. Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Former Major League Baseball All-Star shortstop Eddie Joost will participate in a Legends Series event at the Baseball Hall of Fame's Bullpen Theater at 1 p.m. today.
Joost, 92, earned All-Star honors in 1949 and 1952 during a 17-year playing career, from 1936-55. Joost had five hits in the 1940 World Series, helping the Cincinnati Reds beat the Detroit Tigers. He also served the Philadelphia Athletics as a player/manager in their final season, leading the team to a 51-103 record in 1954.
The Legends Series event is included with a paid admission to the Hall. Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Sidney Pee-Wee football will hold sign-ups from 6-8 p.m. today and Friday in Room 318 at the Sidney Civic Center.
Cost is $35, which is due at the time of registration. Youths ages 8-12 as of Nov. 1 are eligible.
A mandatory weigh-in is scheduled for Saturday at the Sidney Fire Hall. Players must produce birth certificates at the weigh-in. The weigh-in time will be announced during sign-ups.

The great-grandsons of Babe Ruth and Josh Gibson will visit the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Brent Stevens, who is related to Ruth, and Sean Gibson will participate in an educational program centering on the two Hall of Famers.
The presentation, set to run in the Bullpen Theater, features a painting titled "Josh and the Babe" by artist Bill Purdom. After the program, Stevens and Sean Gibson will be available to sign prints of the painting.

Johnson City High will host the first Section Four rules interpretation meeting for the 2008 fall sports season. Coaches of all levels are encouraged to attend the meetings, which run at various sites from Aug. 14-21.

Girls swimming (preseason): 7 p.m. Aug. 19 at Owego Free Academy.

The second annual West Branch Angler Ruffed Grouse Society Sporting Clays Challenge runs from 9:30 a.m.-noon on Aug. 23 at the West Branch Angler Resort, 150 Faulkner Road in Hancock.
Registration will be accepted from 8-9 a.m. Lunch follows the challenge at 12:30 p.m.
The event is open to the first 100 paid entries. Cost is $150, which includes entry fee, lunch, a one-year Ruffed Grouse Society membership, a decal and four issues of RGS Magazine. Station-sponsor packages cost $250 and include station and program recognition.
Those who enter before Aug. 20 will receive a free raffle ticket for an Orvis TLS Rod and Reel Combo. Extra tickets cost $10 apiece. Shooters must provide their own ammunition.
