Edmeston Central will host its annual athletic parents night for all varsity, junior varsity and modified sports at 7 p.m. Aug. 14 in the school cafeteria.

{"HeadlineLight14"/}UV practices start Aug. 18

Unadilla Valley will begin practices for its 2008 fall sports season Aug. 18.

The first practice for its varsity and junior varsity football teams runs from 8-11 a.m. Aug. 18 at the high school, as does the opening practice for varsity and JV girls soccer.

Boys soccer practice runs from 5-8 p.m. Aug. 18. Modified football is slated for 8-11 a.m. Aug. 27.

{"HeadlineLight14"/}Great-grandsons to visit Baseball Hall

The great-grandsons of Babe Ruth and Josh Gibson will visit the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Brent Stevens, who is related to Ruth, and Sean Gibson will participate in an educational program centering on the two Hall of Famers.

The presentation, set to run in the Bullpen Theater, features a painting titled "Josh and the Babe" by artist Bill Purdom. After the program, Stevens and Sean Gibson will be available to sign prints of the painting.

The event is included in a paid Hall admission. Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

The Midstate Arms Collectors and Shooters Club will host the Unadilla Gunshow and Flea Market from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday at the Unadilla Rod & Gun Club on Butternut Road in Unadilla.

Admission is free to the event, which will feature more than 100 dealers. Table reservations will be accepted on a cash-in-advance basis, at a cost of $15 per table. Set up begins at 8 a.m.

{"HeadlineLight14"/}Track meets continue Tuesday

Oneonta State and Hurley's Heroes Track Club of Oneonta will conclude its series of Twilight Track & Field Meets at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

The meet features competition in the 50-meter dash, the 800, the mile and the 3,000 for athletes ages 14 and older, as well as the 100, 200 and 400 for all ages. A high jump competition for ages 14 and older also will take place if facilities are available.

There is no cost to participate. Athletes should be properly dressed to compete.

{"HeadlineLight14"/}O-Tigers 5K set for Tuesday

A.O. Fox Hospital, the Oneonta Tigers and the Delsego Roadrunners Club will host the ninth annual Oneonta Tigers 5K road race at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Part of A.O. Fox Hospital Night at Damaschke Field, the race will start an hour before Oneonta's New York-Penn League game against the Mahoning Valley Scrappers. The event starts at the Damaschke Field box office and ends with a stretch along the outfield warning track.

Each race entrant will receive two tickets to the game. The first 200 to register will receive T-shirts.

Author Fred Glueckstein will appear at the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown for a discussion and book-signing at 1 p.m. Aug. 14.

Glueckstein, a Maryland resident, is the author of "Mickey Mantle: Rookie in Pinstripes." He is a columnist for PhelpsSports.com, an all-equestrian sports service, and the Equestrian Network Magazine. Glueckstein also wrote "The '27 Yankees and Of Men, Women and Horses."

{"HeadlineLight14"/}Fall sports rules meetings set

Johnson City High will host the first Section Four rules interpretation meeting for the 2008 fall sports season. Coaches of all levels are encouraged to attend the meetings, which run at various sites from Aug. 14-21.

The schedule is as follows:

Football (preseason meeting): 6:30 p.m. Aug. 14 at Johnson City High.

Girls swimming (preseason): 7 p.m. Aug. 19 at Owego Free Academy.

Cross country (preseason): 5 p.m. Aug. 19 at 4-H Camp in McGraw.

Soccer: 7 p.m. Aug. 18 at Union-Endicott; 7 p.m. Aug. 19 at Cortland County Office Building; 7 p.m. Aug. 20 at Arnot Ogden Medical Center; 7:30 p.m. Aug. 21 at Oneonta Holiday Inn.

The TGIF fall organization meeting originally scheduled for Friday has been moved to 7 p.m. Aug. 15 at Holiday Lanes in Oneonta. Captains should call Jan Harrison at 607-263-5800 to inform the league if they need bowlers or if their respective rosters are filled to capacity.

Oneonta State will host its first "Dining with Champions," a dinner in celebration of the community, at 6 p.m. Aug. 16 at its Alumni Field House.

Tickets cost $100 apiece. All proceeds will support student-athlete travel initiatives and facility enhancements.

O-State has designated several community members as "champions" who will serve as table hosts for the event. Seating at specific tables is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Cost is $55 per player and includes golf, cart, food and beverages. Hole sponsors are available at $50 per hole.

Oneonta High will begin varsity and junior varsity practices for the 2008 fall sports season Aug. 18. Modified programs will begin practicing Aug. 27.

OHS and Oneonta Middle School athletes must be cleared by the OHS/OMS health office to participate. All athletes must have updated physicals, completed health history questionnaires and clearance from the school physician before the start of each sports season. Paperwork must be submitted to the OHS/OMS health office before Aug. 11.

The school physician will be available to clear athletes on Aug. 11 and 18.

The second annual West Branch Angler Ruffed Grouse Society Sporting Clays Challenge runs from 9:30 a.m.-noon on Aug. 23 at the West Branch Angler Resort, 150 Faulkner Road in Hancock.

Registration will be accepted from 8-9 a.m. Lunch follows the challenge at 12:30 p.m.

The event is open to the first 100 paid entries. Cost is $150, which includes entry fee, lunch, a one-year Ruffed Grouse Society membership, a decal and four issues of RGS Magazine. Station-sponsor packages cost $250 and include station and program recognition.
