Phelan, Parrington earn preseason accolades for Hartwick

Two Hartwick College seniors recently earned lofty preseason recognition, the school announced Tuesday.

Football player Jack Phelan was named a preseason Division III All-American at wide receiver by Lindy's College Football 2008 Preview and soccer player Liam Parrington was placed on the Hermann Trophy Watch List, an honor that goes to the top Division I player in the country.

Phelan made 73 receptions for 1,628 yards and 23 touchdowns as a junior, when he earned first-team All-American honors from D3football.com. He's the lone Empire 8 Conference player to be selected to Lindy's first team and one of three from New York colleges.

Phelan's average of 148 receiving yards last season led the nation. His 23 touchdowns broke Hartwick's single-season record and tied for third on the all-time Division III list.

The Hawks also return senior quarterback Jason Boltus _ winner of the prestigious Melberger Award last season. Hartwick, which went 8-3 last season and made its first appearance in the NCAA Division III tournament, opens the 2008 season at home against Western New England on Sept. 6.

Parrington, a defender, was one of 48 players named to the Missouri Athletic Club's Hermann Trophy Watch List. Two former Hartwick players have won the Hermann Trophy _ the late Glenn "Mooch" Myernick in 1976 and Billy Gazonas in 1977, when Hartwick won the Division I national championship.

Parrington earned first-team National Soccer Coaches Association of America/Adidas North Atlantic All-Region honors and was a second-team all-Mid American Conference selection last season, his first season with the Hawks.

He was selected to the Westfield Insurance Cup all-tournament team and was named the Garth Stam Defensive MVP of the 32nd Annual Mayor's Cup, the longest running college soccer tournament in the country.

Parrington had a goal and an assist last season.

Hartwick's first game is Aug. 29 against Drexel in Baltimore.
