Defending sectional champs win opener

Staff Report

Cherry Valley-Springfield's Mike Cagganello scored with 12 minutes, 11 seconds left Friday to give the reigning Section Four Class D boys soccer champions a 1-0 win over Davenport in the first round of the Edmeston Kickoff Tournament.

Jeremy Hoag shielded Davenport goalie Christian Hall on an entry pass into the penalty box from the right side, then crossed to Cagganello, who knocked it into the open net.

"We dominated the first half and we just couldn't capitalize," CV-S coach Terri Adams said. "Then we finally knocked one in in the second half."

The Patriots (1-0) won their first Class D sectional crown in boys soccer last year, when they beat Laurens, 2-1, in the final. CV-S finished 19-2-1 after a 2-1 overtime loss to Poland in a state quarterfinal.

On Friday, CV-S had a 22-4 advantage in shots.

"It's tough coming off right off 10 practices right into a tournament," Adams said. "It's all or nothing. I thought they held their own. We have some things to work on. Defensively I was happy. We just have to work on some things offensively. The opportunities were there, we just didn't finish. It's good to see that."

Hall made 13 saves for the Wildcats (0-1), who play host Edmeston in the consolation game at 2:30 p.m. Saturday. The Panthers lost, 1-0, to Morris. Ben VanAlstine made four saves for the Patriots, who meet Morris in the final at 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

Travis Cormier scored with 17:10 left in the first half to give the Mustangs a season-opening win in the first round of the Edmeston Kickoff Tournament.

Edmeston defender Ryan Giordano tried to head a long entry pass as goalie Nick Davoulas called for the ball. Giordano headed it, though, setting up Cormier on the left side for a shot into the upper-right corner.

"Nick had called for it, but maybe a split-second too late," Edmeston coach Ed Wheeldon said. "By the time he called it, Ryan was already in the process of heading the ball."

Davoulas finished with eight saves for the Panthers, who had a 16-9 advantage in shots. Edmeston meets Davenport in the consolation at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

Joey Utter made 11 saves to earn the shutout for the Mustangs, who face Cherry Valley-Springfield in the championship at 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

Whittaker scored off an assist from Evan Palmer on an attack down the middle, beating Sidney goalie Ian Ostrander to the lower right for the final margin.

Palmer converted a pass from Luke Winn to start the scoring 20 minutes into the game. Josh Edwards tied the score on a penalty kick after getting dumped in the penalty area. Edwards scored into the upper-right half with 10 minutes left in the first half.

Jeremy Gray had eight saves for B-G to match Ostrander.

The Bobcats spoiled the debut of first-year Sidney coach Scott Hornung, who took over for his father, Steve.

"He's pretty much staying away," Scott Hornung said of his dad, who completed his 22nd season last fall. "Half the team played modified last year, so I'm real happy."

B-G advanced to the championship game against Chenango Valley at 7 p.m. Saturday. Sidney will meet Windsor in the consolation at 3 p.m. Saturday. CV topped Windsor, 1-0, in the other first-round game.
