Edmeston, Oneonta girls win big

Junior Kori Hamm finished with three goals and an assist Saturday as the defending Section Four Class D champion Edmeston girls soccer team won the Edmeston Kickoff Classic championship game with a 5-0 thumping of Unadilla Valley.

Hamm earned tournament MVP honors for the Panthers (2-0), who built on a 2-0 halftime lead with three goals in the first 15 minutes of the second half.

Susanna Johnson made three saves for Edmeston, which received goals from Tonya Brownell and all-tournament selection Emily Slentz. Taylor Ross and Stefanie Cornnell also earned all-tournament spots for the Panthers.

Edmeston, which also won the Tri-Valley League last season, starts league play at 4:30 p.m. today against visiting Morris.

Monica Jones had two goals and an assist as Oneonta opened its season with a Southern Tier Conference rout on the road.

Kaitlyn O'Connor, Kaitlyn Culpepper, Hannah Lawson, Cha Cha Naito and Erin Wolstenholme contributed goals for the Yellowjackets (1-0), who led, 4-2, at halftime.

Oneonta had a 23-7 advantage in shots. Andrea Frutiger made two saves to earn the victory for the Yellowjackets.

Celeste Kadylak scored all three goals for Johnson City (0-1).

Nicole Butzke had a goal and an assist as Schenevus won in the consolation game of the Minekill Tournament.

Cassandra Brown also scored for the Dragons (1-1), who had a 15-5 advantage in shots.

Catherine Hernandez made seven saves to earn the shutout for Schenevus, which hosts South Kortright today.

Tara DiBenedetto stopped 11 shots for the Rockets (0-2), who play Franklin in the opening round of the Stamford Mayor's Cup at 6 p.m. today.
