Hartwick men's soccer loses second straight

Hartwick College went winless in its season-opening men's soccer tournament at Loyola College of Maryland, who beat the Hawks, 2-0, on Sunday.

Junior midfielder Sam Wright and freshman midfielder Nick Roydhouse earned all-tournament selections for the Hawks, who started their season Friday with a 2-1 loss to Drexel University in the first round of the Black and Decker Classic at Alumnae Field in Baltimore.

Jamie Darvill, a junior, opened Sunday's scoring in the 41st minute with a goal to the lower-left corner off a cross from Wade McHugh.

In the second half, Darvill one-touched a pass from Phil Bannister past Hartwick keeper Jeremy Vuolo for the final margin. Charlie Hutton also received an assist on the play.

Goalie Milos Kocic made three saves for the Greyhounds (2-0), who tied Hartwick in shots at eight apiece. Vuolo finished with two saves for the Hawks (0-2), who host UNC Wilmington in the opening round of the Mayor's Cup XXXIII at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Elmore Field.

Marywood 2, Hartwick 1

Amanda Costello scored on a breakaway with fewer than eight minutes left Sunday, lifting Marywood to a victory in the championship game of the Erinn K. Brozman Memorial Cup on Sunday at Elmore Field.

Costello received a pass from Caitlin Light at midfield, broke in alone and beat losing goalie Kellyn Rowse. The Pacers, who opened with a 3-1 win Saturday over Johnson & Wales, won their second straight Cup title as a result.

Lisa Hanselman converted a feed from Leslie Higham for her third goal of the tournament and a 1-0 Marywood lead 4:08 into the final. Alesha Wright tied it in the 59th minute off a pass from Marisa Streun.

Goalie Meghan Coyle made four saves for the Pacers, who were outshot, 13-9. Rowse finished with six saves for the Hawks, who held a 9-4 advantage in corner kicks.

Hartwick hosts Skidmore at 4 p.m. Saturday at Elmore Field in the opening round of the Mayor's Cup Tournament. Wilmington and Oneonta State play the other opener at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Red Dragon Field.

Streun scored 38 seconds into the Hawks' season opener as Hartwick cruised to victory in the first round of the Brozman Memorial Cup on Saturday at Elmore Field.

Lauren Ploof finished with two goals and an assist for the Hawks, who received a goal and two assists from Brittany Pine. Alesha Wright, Krista Marzano and Alexandra Luke contributed first-half goals as Hartwick jumped to a 7-1 lead at the break.

The Hawks dominated with a 23-2 advantage in shots. Goalkeeper Kelly Griffin made no saves in the shutout. Davenport graduate Brittany Westcott made 12 saves for Cazenovia.

RPI Invitational

Hartwick finished third at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Invitational, which ran Saturday and Sunday at Prospect Park in Troy.

Carly Jesset earned Hartwick's point Saturday by winning the sixth singles flight with two victories. She also teamed with Joanna Rudy to split two matches in the third doubles flight Sunday.

RPI won the three-team tournament with six points. St. John Fisher placed second with two.

Red Dragon Invitational

Hartwick went 1-3 at the Holiday Inn/Red Dragon Invitational after back-to-back losses in Gold Division play Saturday.

Oneonta won Saturday's opener, 26-24, 25-23, 25-18. Freshman Courtney Desmond finished with seven kills, four blocks and three digs. Darcy Dolge amassed 21 assists and Kerry Sisson had 11 digs.

In the second match, Scranton earned a 25-14, 25-13, 25-12 sweep en route to the Gold Division title. Dolge contributed 10 assists for Hartwick, which placed Desmond on the all-tournament team (35 kills, 12 digs, 10 blocks over four matches).

The Hawks compete in the Elmira College Tournament on Saturday and Sunday. Hartwick opens against Russell Sage at 4 p.m., followed by Pitt-Bradford at 8 p.m.
