Cats' Haight hits milestone

Staff Report

Senior Chelsea Haight scored three times Tuesday to become the second Davenport girls soccer player to reach 100 goals as the host Wildcats earned a 3-1 non-league victory over Delhi.

Haight's third goal _ nine minutes into the second half off an assist from Kate Swantak _ gave Davenport a 3-0 lead. That goal also allowed Haight to join Jennifer (Wright) Henderson as the lone Davenport players to score at least 100 goals. Former Davenport boys coach Henderson graduated in the early 1990s with 107 or 109 goals, Davenport girls coach Ray Preston said.

Haight received a pass from Swantak outside the penalty box on the left side. She made a move left before turning right and shooting inside the far post.

"She's certainly an important person who can play anywhere on the field," Preston said. "She possesses great speed and can shoot with either foot. She's an all-around player and an all-around athlete."

Haight's first-half goals were set up by Amanda Toombs, the first coming four minutes into play and the second with six minutes left in the half.

Macy Gile scored for Delhi.

Davenport (2-0) hosts Jefferson on Thursday.

The Eagles, who graduated top scorers Stephanie Shellman and Macy Davis this past June, held a 45-2 advantage in shots and had a 16-1 edge in corner kicks.

"We started eight new players today," said Downsville coach Burt Reed, who added that SUNY Delhi freshman Shellman will face Davis and another former teammate, Kayla Stone, on Thursday, when the Broncos visit Broome Community College. "We passed when we should have shot and we shot when we should have passed."

Reed also said 2005 Downsville graduate Courtney Hoyt, The Daily Star's co-Player of the Year with then-teammate Alexa Henderson, transferred from SUNY Delhi to Oneonta State this fall. Hoyt helped the Eagles to an undefeated season and the Class D state championship in 2005.

Reed said Hoyt will not play soccer for the Red Dragons but plans to play basketball this winter.
