OHS boys fall; Laurens starts with win

Staff Report

Two games into the Southern Tier Athletic Conference soccer schedule and Oneonta High's boys are still looking for their first goal and victory of the 2008 season.

The Yellowjackets followed Saturday's 0-0 season-opening tie against Owego with a 1-0 loss at Maine-Endwell on Tuesday. The Spartans ended Oneonta's 2007 season with a 1-0 overtime victory in a Section Four Class A quarterfinal on Oct. 24.

Maine-Endwell's Adam Kozecke scored with 23 minutes, 46 seconds left in the second half. The goal came on a counter-attack as the Spartans' Dan McCarthy made a save and then punted the ball downfield. Tommy Moon controlled the long kick and took a shot that hit off the crossbar. OHS goalie Chris Hayen got a piece of the deflection, but the ball squirted to Kozecke, who kicked it in.

Yellowjackets coach Alex Brannan said OHS had numerous opportunities.

"We were in 1-on-1 about four times but didn't hit the net," he said. "Their goalie made two good saves and three went past the post. We outshot them, 8-5, at their place, so that's pretty good."

Oneonta (0-1-1) hosts Johnson City on Thursday at the Soccer Hall of Fame.
