Morris boys knock off defending champs

Staff Report

Corey Forgit scored late in the first half Thursday and goalie Joey Utter made 18 saves as visiting Morris upended defending Section Four Class D champion Cherry Valley-Springfield, 1-0, in Tri-Valley League boys soccer.

Forgit took Travis Cormeil's long pass _ from the right side to the middle _ and stuck it inside the upper-right corner with 2 minutes, 23 seconds to go before halftime.

"It was a hard-fought game," said CV-S coach Terri Adams, the reigning Daily Star Coach of the Year whose team also won the Tri-Valley title last season. "Morris was moving the ball nicely today."

Utter remained solid throughout for the Mustangs, who were outshot, 24-10, and withstood nine corner-kick opportunities by the Patriots. Morris also avenged a 3-0 loss to CV-S in the championship game of the Edmeston Kickoff Tournament this past Saturday.
