Hartwick men looking to rebound at Mayor's Cup

Hartwick College looks to rebound from an 0-2 start to the men's soccer season at 7:30 p.m. today, when the Hawks host Florida Gulf Coast University in the second Division I game of the Mayor's Cup XXXIII.

The Division I portion of the Cup begins at 5 p.m. today, when Syracuse meets UNC Wilmington. The two-round tournament continues Sunday as Syracuse meets FGC at 11 a.m. and Hartwick plays UNC Wilmington at 1:30 p.m.

All Mayor's Cup games involving D-I teams will be played at Hartwick's Elmore Field.

Oneonta State will host the Division III men's Mayor's Cup today and Saturday at Red Dragon Field. O-State opens the tournament at 1 p.m. today against Susquehanna University. Rowan University and Allegheny College follow at 4 p.m. The D-III men's consolation match is set for 1 p.m. Saturday, followed by the championship game at 4 p.m.

On Saturday, O-State and Hartwick will compete in the first round of the women's Mayor's Cup at Elmore Field. The Red Dragons open against Wilmington College (Ohio) at 1:30 p.m. Hartwick and Skidmore follow at 4 p.m. The second day of the tournament moves to Oneonta's Red Dragon Field on Sunday. Hartwick and Wilmington meet at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, followed by O-State and Skidmore at 4 p.m. Admission to all Mayor's Cup games is free.

D-I Men

Hartwick has won six of the last seven Mayor's Cup titles and owns 19 championships in the 32-year history of the tournament. The Hawks opened their 2008 season with a 2-1 loss to Drexel last Friday at Loyola's Black and Decker Classic, then fell, 2-0, to the tournament host Sunday.

Hartwick's first Cup opponent _ FGC _ lost, 2-1, to 2007 NCAA runner-up Ohio State before beating Penn State, 1-0, last weekend. Francesco DiStefano and Matt O'Shaughnessy scored for the Eagles. UNC Wilmington opened its 2008 schedule with a 3-0 loss to Campbell, then stunned 20th-ranked Furman, 3-2. The Orange (1-0-1) started with a 3-0 defeat of Canisius, then tied Colgate, 1-1. Junior forward Tom Perevegyencev leads Syracuse, which is 10-0-5 in its last 15 non-conference games _ with three goals.

D-III Men

Picked to finish second in the SUNY Athletic Conference this season, Oneonta enters the Mayor's Cup with a 2-0 record. The Red Dragons opened their season with wins over Farmingdale and Castleton State as freshman goalie Max Siegelman earned his first two college victories.

Last year, O-State went 0-2 in the Mayor's Cup, including a 2-1 loss to eventual champion Ithaca.

D-III Women

O-State looks for its third straight Mayor's Cup title and seventh since 2000. Last year, the Red Dragons shut out Illinois Wesleyan and Ramapo.

Last weekend, the coaches of the SUNYAC selected Oneonta to win the league title. O-State went 1-1 at the Roanoke College Tournament, rebounding from a 1-0 season-opening loss to Johns Hopkins with a 1-0 victory over the host. Hartwick went 1-1 at the Erinn Brozman Memorial Cup this past weekend.

Cobleskill 5, Morrisville 0

Kristen Raina scored twice to lead SUNY Cobleskill to a victory on the road Thursday. Elizabeth Goyette, Dana Hamm and Jessica Stolz also scored for the Fighting Tigers (1-0), who are an NCAA Division III team for the first time this year. Lisa Every made two saves to earn the shutout.

Tori Matt had three goals and three assists as host Broome routed SUNY Delhi in NJCAA play.

Milford graduate Brenna Campbell also scored for the Hornets, who received seven saves from Schenevus graduate Alicia Sagendorf. The Broncos (0-2) host Alfred at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Carly Jesset and Christine Sorrentino remained unbeaten this season with an 8-6 win at third doubles Thursday, but Hartwick (1-1) fell at Rennselaer in a non-conference match.

Anne Neely also improved to 2-0 for Hartwick this fall. She earned a point at third singles when RPI's Andrea Dalton retired in the first set. Neely led, 4-1, at the time of Dalton's exit. The Hawks host RIT on Saturday.

Betsy Breaznell's 6-2, 6-0 first-singles sweep of Juanita Fuentes led Hartwick to an Empire 8 thumping at Utica College on Wednesday in the first dual match of the season for both teams.

Hartwick to open on road

Hartwick will open its 2008 season with two games in Pennsylvania, starting at 7 tonight at Muhlenberg. The Hawks follow at 4 p.m. Saturday against host Scranton. Hartwick returns 10 starters and its top six point producers from last season's 8-10 team. The Hawks were picked to finished first this season in the Empire 8 by its conference coaches.

Muhlenberg, 12-7 last year, are 0-2 this fall. Scranton (6-12 in 2007) is off to a 1-1 start. Hartwick won, 3-2, on penalty strokes over Scranton last September, when the Hawks fell, 2-1, to Muhlenberg.

Oneonta State (2-2) visits Ithaca this weekend to compete in the Bomber Invitational. The Red Dragons open the two-day tournament at 2 p.m. today against Ithaca, then meet Hamilton at 4 p.m. Saturday's opponents will be determined after the completion of pool play today.
