Cody Reed had two touchdowns as reigning Class D state champion Walton opened its season Saturday with a 46-0 thumping of visiting Tri-Valley in a non-conference football game.
Reed opened the scoring on a 4-yard run in the first quarter. He also had a 38-yard fumble return at the end of the second quarter to help the Warriors open a 32-0 halftime lead.
The Warriors defense held the Bears to 68 yards _ all on the ground _ and four first downs. Walton, which won its 14th straight game, had nine shutouts en route to earning its second state championship in school history last season.
Fullback Robbie Rigas rushed for 59 yards on nine carries to lead the Warriors, who had 200 yards on the ground under a steady rain.
"After looking at the tapes, for the first game, we were happy with (the players)," Walton coach Jim Hoover said. "We still have a long way to go. We have to eliminate mistakes. We fumbled twice on snaps from center but didn't have any turnovers, which was good. ... We're probably where we think we should be right now. We still have a lot of improvement we can have."
The teams combined to go 0-for-9 passing, including an 0-for-3 effort by Walton quarterback Chad Gardepe.
"We have to work on catching the ball," Hoover said. "We had some open receivers and dropped it. I think that's first-game jitters. I felt bad for Chad. His three passes were really on target and (T-V) made a really nice play on one."
Phil Hanley had two touchdowns for Walton. Bryant Mead and Evan Boyd each contributed a touchdown run.
Walton hosts non-division opponent Unatego (0-1) at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
