Jared Hamm scored four of Edmeston's five goals over the weekend, leading the Panthers boys to the Group Four championship of the Hall of Fame Cup at the National Soccer Hall of Fame. Hamm scored three times Sunday in the Panthers' 4-3 victory over Webutuck.
"Truthfully, I knew we were playing a strong Poland team and Webutuck is a strong Class C team, so I didn't think we had much of a chance," said Edmeston coach Ed Wheeldon, whose team tied 2007 Class D state finalist Poland, 1-1, on Saturday. "I was hoping the kids would not get demoralized and that we'd hang close. To think we would have been able to win both games, I would have called myself a liar."
But Edmeston (4-1-1) nearly pulled it off, despite being outshot a combined 33-14. Panthers goalie Nick Davoulas made 27 saves over both games.
"He kept us in the games," Wheeldon said of Davoulas' play.
Against Webutuck, Hamm scored two first-half goals in helping Edmeston to a 3-1 lead.
But Alex Murphy scored 15 seconds into the second half to narrow the gap to 3-2. Hamm answered six minutes into the second half on a penalty kick after Ben Conboy was fouled in the box. Two minutes later, Patrick McCaffrey scored for Webutuck to make it 4-3.
Davoulas' biggest stop came on a lofted pass into the box. He punched the ball out while making contact with Alex Murphy, who had one goal and one assist.
In Saturday's game, Hamm scored with 2:30 left to give Edmeston a 1-0 lead. He received a pass on the left wing from Nick DeGristina and scored on a 25-yard shot to the far post.
Gordon Miller tied it for Poland with 12 seconds left, scoring from 45 yards on a direct kick.
Poland defeated Cherry Valley-Springfield, 2-1, in four overtimes in a Class D state quarterfinal last season before losing to Chazy in the state final. Edmeston plays at Tri-Valley League rival Laurens on Thursday.

Oneonta 2, Skaneateles 1
Monica Jones and Cha Cha Naito scored Sunday for the Yellowjackets, who went 1-1 in the Hall of Fame Cup at the National Soccer Hall of Fame.
Naito's goal came with 31:52 remaining and gave OHS a 2-0 lead. The play started when Naito sent a throughball to Jones, who took a shot that Skaneateles goalie Erica Tardiff saved. The ball caromed back to the 18, where Naito drove a shot into the upper corner.
Jones opened the scoring with 26:41 left in the first half. She received a pass from Bridgette Aikens on the left side before lofting a left-footed shot inside the far post.
"As disappointed as we were Saturday (a 1-0 loss to South Glens in which OHS had a 19-4 advantage in shots), it was good to bounce back," OHS coach Jerry Mackey said. "In both games, we played well and we're starting to get settled as a group. We had the better of play (Sunday) and did enough positive things to get the win."
Jackie Stuker scored for Skaneateles with 4:27 left.
On Saturday, South Glens Falls received a goal from Katelyn Baker on a direct kick from just outside the box with 6:16 left in the first half.
"We did everything but score," Mackey said. "That's the frustrating thing about soccer. In any other game, we win by 20 points or three touchdowns, but in this game you really have to make sure you get up on a team. You can't let them hang around."
Oneonta's best chance came off one of 11 corner kicks taken by Jones, who found Sienna Wisse's head in the second half. Wisse's shot deflected off the cross bar.
Oneonta (2-2) plays at Norwich on Tuesday before hosting Owego on Wednesday. Owego ended OHS' season a year ago with a 2-0 victory in sectionals.
