Over the past 10 days, the Oneonta High girls soccer team has outscored five opponents by a combined, 27-4, a statistic boosted by Wednesday's 8-0 victory over visiting Chenango Valley.
The Southern Tier Athletic Conference win improved the Yellowjackets' record to 6-2 overall and 5-1 in league.
The first of Monica Jones' two goals came a minute into play. She intercepted a goal kick and scored on a breakaway. The Jackets scored four more goals in the first half.
Sienna Wisse contributed two goals and one assist, Cha Cha Naito had one goal and three assists, and Nora Walker, Bridgette Aikens and Karsen Shultz also scored.
"We are," OHS coach Jerry Mackey said when asked if his team is playing well against some of the STAC's weaker opponents in winning five straight. "Some years we haven't done that. We end up winning the game but playing down to the level of our competition. We've gotten through this little stretch of games we're supposed to win, and Friday's game at Whitney Point, at least on paper, looks like another one.
"But then we're at Chenango Forks (on Tuesday), and they were (East) Division champs last year. We tied them, 1-1, last year and they're unbeaten now. Then we're at Susquehanna Valley (on Sept. 25), and last week, they were beating (unbeaten) Maine-Endwell, 3-1, before M-E closed the gap and won the game. So SV is very competitive. We just have to realize the pace of play and talent level will go up drastically next week."
