Walton thumps Seton

Staff Report

Bryant Mead rushed for 203 yards and two touchdowns to lead unbeaten Walton a 30-0 Section Four Football Conference Division VII victory over host Seton Catholic on Saturday night.

The Warriors (3-0, 1-0) have won 16 straight and have outscored opponents, 98-0, this season. During its win streak, defending Class D state champion Walton has 12 shutouts.

"(Seton was) throwing for about 200 yards a game," Walton coach Jim Hoover said. "We knew we had to stop that. Defensively, we did well."

Robbie Rigas and Mead had touchdown runs in the first quarter, helping the Warriors to a 14-0 lead.

Chad Gardepe hit Eddie Dickson on a 36-yard touchdown pass with under 30 seconds remaining in the first half. Evan Boyd's conversion run made it 22-0.

Mead had a 67-yard touchdown run in the third quarter to close the scoring.

The Warriors had a 350-39 edge in rushing. Rigas finished with 63 yards on 10 carries.

Walton hosts rival Delhi at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

Westmoreland 21, Delhi 14

Justin Becker scored on a 1-yard run late in the fourth quarter as host Westmoreland earned a non-conference victory.

Westmoreland got the ball back for its final drive after an odd series of events.

Delhi (1-2) punted, but while the ball was still in the air, an official blew the whistle, Delhi coach Dave Kelly said. A fumble happened on the play and Delhi recovered, but because the whistle had signaled the end of the play, by rule, the down had to be played over, Kelly said.

Westmoreland (3-0) received the punt safely on the next play.

"Possession of the ball right there would have been huge," Kelly said. "That was the main thing, but we weren't moving it well, either. We had it and couldn't get a couple of first downs."

Luke Burns completed 6 of 16 passes for 81 yards to lead Delhi, which received 89 yards rushing and a touchdown from Jack Fletcher.

"They are a good team and are enjoying a good year," Kelly said. "We did an excellent job in many capacities. Against the run, we were strong. Kids were where they belonged. We continue to have a little difficulty defending a real passer and a man-sized receiver. The game has evolved to the point where passing is very threatening. We just have to continue to do a better job."

Delhi visits rival Walton at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

R.J. Alton rushed for 79 yards on 19 carries and scored on a 20-yard run in the third overtime to lift visiting Cooperstown to a victory Friday night.

The Redskins and Sauquoit Valley played to a scoreless tie after regulation, traded field goals in the first overtime and touchdowns in the second overtime.

In high school, each team gets the ball in overtime, beginning at the opposition's 20-yard-line.

SV (0-3) struck first in the second overtime when Nick Critelli scored on a 20-yard pass from Ted Kondzielawa, but the kick failed. Brad Ashford then scored on a 17-yard pass from Tyler Hoke to tie the score at 9, but Cooperstown's kick also failed.

Alton scored to start the third overtime and Alec Silvera made the extra point. The Redskins held Sauquoit Valley for the victory.

Silvera finished with 58 yards rushing on 10 carries.
