October 01, 2008 04:00 am Greene played the part of lightning on a rainy Tuesday afternoon. The visiting Trojans struck twice in a span of 1 minute, 22 seconds en route to a 2-0 Midstate Athletic Conference victory over Sidney, which lost its first girls soccer match this season to drop into a first-place tie with Greene in Division I. "It just wasn't our day to put the ball in the back of the net," said Sidney coach Jody Gravelin, whose state-ranked team fell to 10-1-1 despite a 15-3 advantage in shots and a 6-3 edge in corner kicks. "We had two shots that hit the crossbar, a couple that went right smack in front of the goal and some beautiful crosses that were just an inch away. We just couldn't put them in." Sidney and Greene each moved to 8-1-1 in the MAC with four league games to go. Third-place Unadilla Valley improved to 5-3-2 in MAC play with a 1-0 win over visiting Oxford on Tuesday. Gravelin said the team that finishes with the best MAC record wins the league title as there is no crossover championship game. Greene's Liz Wentlent opened the scoring with 15:47 left, finishing a corner kick from Megan McDermott that deflected off the hand of losing goalie Stephanie Simonds (one save). "It was a beautifully placed corner kick right in front of the goal," Gravelin said. "They crashed on it and did what they were supposed to do." McDermott made it 2-0 with 14:25 to go when she tucked a 25-yard direct kick just under the crossbar. "No keeper in the league could have stopped that," Gravelin said. "I'd be surprised if it didn't nick the crossbar." Winning goalie Emily Pierce stopped eight shots for the Trojans, who avenged a 3-1 home loss to the Warriors on Sept. 6. Sidney visits Oxford on Monday before closing against Unatego, Delhi and UV. Sidney's tie came at Unatego, 1-1, on Sept. 16. The Warriors already own 3-0 victories over Delhi and UV this fall.
