OHS boys fall at JC

Staff Report

Oneonta goalie Chris Hayen made seven saves, but the visiting Yellowjackets lost, 1-0, in a Southern Tier Athletic Conference boys soccer game at Johnson City on Tuesday.

The Wildcats scored 2 1/2 minutes into play, when Kevin McIntee scored on an 8-yard shot from the left side off a cross from Brad Mizera.

"The ball came from the right side and went by everyone, and they had one player at the back post," OHS coach Alex Brannan said of the goal. "We had a lot of players there, they just didn't hit it. Chris came out to cut the shot, but it went wide across the box."

The Yellowjackets' best chance came with about 2 1/2 minutes left. Dan Dailey flicked a pass to Logan Osterhoudt, whose shot from close range was saved by JC's Jon Yurecka.

"We definitely played these guys tougher," said Brannan, whose team lost to the Wildcats, 3-0, on Sept. 4. "We outshot them, 4-3, in the first half. We only got two shots away in the second half, but we had some chances. Overall, I don't think we played great, but we hung in there."

OHS (8-6-1, 7-5-1), which has lost two straight following a six-game winning streak, plays at Norwich on Tuesday.

"I think everybody is coming together," Morris coach David Sander said. "The offense is being more aggressive.

"We lost a lot of games, 1-0, earlier this season, but that was a big difference because those were 7-0 or 8-0 losses last season," he continued. "They knew they were close. We just had to start scoring and they've picked it up."

"Both goals were defensive lapses by us," said Cooperstown coach Frank Miosek, whose team fell two games behind Mount Markham in the CSC. "We dug ourselves a big hole, but other than that, it was pretty even. It could have gone either way. We actually played better offensively, than when we lost 1-0 (to Mount Markham on Sept. 17)."

Brennan Chambers made it 2-0 when he scored off an assist from Wood with 18 minutes left. Wood served the ball from the right side to Chambers, who was on the left side. Chambers hit a one-timer for the goal back to the right corner.
