Jefferson girls return to Delaware glory

Staff Report

Jefferson made quick work of Gilboa on Thursday en route to its first Delaware League division title since the 1999 girls soccer season.

The host J-Hawks scored inside the first minute of each half and clinched the Mountain Division crown with a 4-0 victory in their league finale. Jefferson (12-1-2, 7-1-2) eliminated Downsville, which has earned at least a share of the league championship the last three seasons, from the race for the Mountain Division title. The Eagles (10-3-2, 6-2-1) close their DL schedule today at Windham.

Jefferson will play Upper Division champion Davenport (17-0, 10-0) in the DL crossover Oct. 18 at the National Soccer Hall of Fame. Both teams are ranked in the state. The Wildcats are responsible for Jefferson's loss this season, earning a 3-0 home victory Sept. 4.

"They're a very good team," Jefferson coach Roy Bower said of Davenport, which finished a perfect DL season Thursday with a 6-2 rout of host Windham. "We have to control the midfield. If we do that, I think we'll be in good shape. We didn't do that last time."

Katie Bedford opened the scoring against Gilboa 43 seconds after the game started, turning a Hailee Pasa cross from the left wing into an 8-yard goal. Danni All followed with an unassisted goal 10 minutes before halftime for the J-Hawks, who received two second-half goals from Chelsea Martin.

She gave Jefferson a 3-0 lead 50 seconds into the second half, converting a breakaway after receiving a Bedford cross from the right side, then capped the scoring with an unassisted goal.

Vanessa Speenburgh made four saves in her sixth shutout of the season for Jefferson, which is 9-0-2 since losing to Davenport.

Jefferson, which ends its regular season with a non-leaguer at 7 p.m. Saturday at undefeated Cherry Valley-Springfield, won five straight division titles from 1995-1999. Its run included back-to-back championship victories over Davenport in 1996 and 1997 and consecutive ties against Margaretville in 1998 and 1999.

Davenport has appeared in four of the last five crossovers, winning consecutive titles in 2003 and 2004 and tying Downsville in 2006. The Wildcats fell, 3-0, to Downsville in last season's championship.
