Sidney's chances for a Midstate Athletic Conference girls soccer championship took a major hit Friday, following a 0-0 tie against visiting Delhi.
Sidney's tie, coupled with Greene's 2-1 victory over Unatego, gives the Trojans a half-game lead with one regular-season game left for both teams.
The Warriors (12-1-2, 10-1-2) closes play in the MAC on Tuesday at Unadilla Valley. Greene (11-1-1 MAC) finishes up against Delhi.
"They knew our top scorers were Danielle (Gravel) and Stephanie (Meno), and they double- and triple-teamed them all over the field," Sidney coach Jody Gravelin said of Delhi's defense. "They did a good job shutting them down. We tried to work the midfield, but it didn't work out.
"This is the team that played us the closest all season," she continued. "Most of the play was contained to the midfield. It was good for us to play a team that played us so well defensively."
Gravelin said both teams had chances. Delhi, which lost, 3-0, to Sidney the first time the teams played, had a shot hit the cross bar and another that was saved by Stephanie Simonds just before it crossed the end line.
Delhi goalie Libby Buel made several diving stops and Sidney had two shots deflect off the post.
