Walton football clinches top seed with 68-12 rout

Walton clinched at least a tie for the Section Four Football Conference Division VII title and will be the top seed for the division in the upcoming playoffs after a 68-12 thumping of visiting Oxford on Saturday.

The Warriors (6-0, 2-0), who won their 19th straight game, can win the division outright with a victory at Harpursville (3-3, 0-2) at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

Seton Catholic Central (3-3, 2-1) is second among the four teams in Division VII. Seton fell, 30-0, to Walton in Week 3. Therefore, if the teams each finish 2-1 in division play, Walton would earn the top seed via the head-to-head tiebreaker.

"I hadn't even thought of it," said 33rd-year Walton coach Jim Hoover about clinching the No. 1 seed. "We just want to go out and win next week and go to 3-0 in the division and go on with the playoffs.

"I've never played down there (in Harpursville)," Hoover continued. "It will be my first game. They weren't in our division for a long time. The few times we've played them, we've played them here in Walton."

Phil Hanley had 142 yards and two touchdowns on six carries to lead Walton on Saturday. Both of his TDs came in the first quarter, on runs of 60 and 55 yards. The Warriors held a 30-0 lead after one quarter en route to a 52-6 halftime advantage.

Oxford (1-5, 1-2) gained 178 yards, with 163 coming through the air. John Wonka connected with Jeremy Nelson for touchdown passes of 74 and 79 yards.

Eddie Dickson finished with three TDs _ two rushing and one on an 85-yard kickoff return, which came right after Nelson's second TD. Robbie Rigas scored twice and Evan Boyd and Jim MacDonald each scored once for defending Class D state champion Walton.
