UV girls upset Sidney; Greene clinches MAC title

Staff Report

Sakura Gysin had a goal and an assist to lead host Unadilla Valley to a 2-1 Midstate Athletic Conference girls soccer upset of Sidney.

Gysin scored the first goal and assisted Kara Collins early in the second half to give the Storm (9-7-2, 7-5-2) a 2-0 lead.

Brittany Schunk scored for Sidney (12-2-2, 10-2-2), which finished second to Greene in the race for the MAC championship. The Trojans completed their MAC schedule with a 4-1 win at Delhi on Tuesday to improve to 12-1-1 in conference play.

Emily Sugar made four saves for Unadilla Valley, which avenged a 3-0 loss at Sidney on Sept. 20. UV is off until the start of the Section Four Class C Tournament next week.

Danielle Conway converted a penalty kick with 5:45 to play as host Bainbridge-Guilford won a Midstate Athletic Conference game. Conway's pk followed an Oxford handball inside the box.

Lauren Porter rallied B-G (4-13, 2-12) to a 2-2 tie when she scored on a pass from Alyssa Falciani with 8:57 left. Falciani also assisted Natasha Gould on a first-half goal for the Bobcats, who will compete in the opening round of the Section Four Class C Tournament on Oct. 22.

Delhi's Sarah Cummings won the 3-mile girls race at the Whitney Point Invitational, crossing in 20 minutes, 40 seconds to lead the Bulldogs to a second-place finish out of eight complete teams.

Bethany Althaus finished sixth (21:41) and Joanna Wheatley placed 10th (22:10) for Delhi, which scored 40 points. Union-Endicott won with 26 points.

J.J. Padovani paced Delhi in the 3-mile boys race, finishing 10th in 18:21. The Bulldogs were fifth (138 points) out of nine complete teams. Josh Chilson won for U-E, which earned the team title with 35 points.

Delhi competes at the Marathon Invitational on Saturday.
