Nico Fernandez scored with 19 minutes, 29 seconds left Tuesday as SUNY Delhi earned a 1-0 Mountain Valley Conference men's soccer victory over host Mohawk Valley.
Mohawk Valley (11-3) entered the game ranked third among NJCAA Division III teams.
Walton graduate Bryan Backus started the play by bringing the ball down the right side. He beat a defender and reached the end line before passing across the box. Hawks goalie David Leigh attempted to cut Backus' angle, but the ball got past him. Fernandez then volleyed the ball in from 6 yards.
The Broncos (12-2-1, 4-1-1) played without top scorer Anis Makaren (12 goals, four assists), who injured his left knee against Genessee on Saturday, said Delhi coach Geoff Moore, who added Makaren attempted to play for about two minutes Tuesday.
"We dominated the first half and (Mohawk Valley) had the better of the play in the second half," Moore said. "It was a well-played game. We got a good contribution from our bench."
Nick Hadnagy made six saves to earn the shutout for the Broncos, who close the regular season at Hudson Valley on Saturday.
