Oneonta High's sectional woes continued Friday.
Erin Jones scored with 4 minutes, 54 seconds remaining in the second overtime as visiting Seton Catholic Central earned a 1-0 girls soccer victory over the Yellowjackets in a Section Four Class B quarterfinal at the National Soccer Hall of Fame fields.
Fifth-seeded Seton (9-5-1) had a restart on the right side from about 25 yards. The ball was kicked toward the goal and knocked around. Erin Wolstenholme made the initial save, but the ball continued to bounce around.
"There was all sorts of chaos in the box," Oneonta coach Jerry Mackey said.
Jones eventually gained control and put the ball in for a 1-0 lead.
"It's disappointing," said Mackey, whose team finished 10-5-1. "It seemed like we had some girls in the area. I don't know whether we were on our heels or if there was an angle."
The fourth-seeded Yellowjackets, who haven't won a sectional game since beating Dryden, 1-0, in a Class B quarterfinal in 2006, had a 14-7 advantage in shots and an 8-3 edge in corner kicks.
"We hit the crossbar two or three times," said Mackey, whose team beat Seton, 1-0, on Sept. 29. "It was set up for us perfectly. We played into the wind in the first half. ... The last 10 minutes of the first half and the second half, we felt we were the aggressors. We just didn't finish and get enough action in the box."
Wolstenholme, who finished with five saves, started the game in the field but switched to goalie about eight minutes into play as starter Emmalee Sloman suffered an injury. Mackey said Sloman came out to stop a bouncing ball and tried to kick it away. A Seton player also tried to get a foot on it, but she kicked Sloman in the left shin instead.
"(Wolstenholme) dropped right in goal and faced some tough 50-50 balls," Mackey said. "In the second half she provided some good punts for us. Going from a field player to a goalie the rest of the way, she did some great things."
