OHS volleyball advances

Staff Report

Kim Cordova's serving led Oneonta High to a tight victory in the first game and the fifth-seeded Yellowjackets cruised thereafter, beating No. 4 Corning East, 3-0, in a Section Four Class B volleyball quarterfinal Tuesday.

OHS (10-5) won, 25-23, 25-9, 25-12, in a match played at Maine-Endwell.

Cordova served the final three points of the first game.

"It was definitely Kim Cordova's serving," OHS coach Lee Ferrara said of the key to the Yellowjackets' Game 1 win. "She started off serving and gave us a 7-0 lead. Then it went back and forth for awhile and Kim came back to serve again and pushed us through. We rolled right through the next two games."

Val Ridgway and Kasondra Hughes had eight kills apiece for the Yellowjackets. Calla Losie contributed 21 assists, and Cordova finished with six aces and three digs.

Next for Oneonta is a round-robin tournament between the other three teams to reach the semifinals at 4 p.m. Thursday at Horseheads. Top-seeded Owego, second-seeded Windsor and third-seeded Maine-Endwell also advanced Tuesday.

Owego beat Dryden, Windsor downed Chenango Valley and Maine-Endwell ousted Johnson City. All the matches were decided by 3-0 scores.

Ferrara said OHS will play each of the semifinalists in two-game matches. The two teams with the best overall records will advance to the final Saturday, back at Horseheads.

Whitney Point 7, Walton 1

Jaime Dean had five goals and an assist as host Whitney Point won a Section Four Class C semifinal.

The Eagles (16-0-2) scored four times in the second half to pull away.

"They definitely stepped it up," said Walton coach Brynne Hoover-Daye, whose team was outshot, 23-6. "Their passing was good and we weren't responding quick enough. We were kind of a step behind everything and against a team so good and disciplined, you can't be a step behind."

Erin Butler scored with 10 minutes, 26 seconds remaining in the first half to cut Walton's deficit to 2-1. Brooke Spencer made 15 saves for the fourth-seeded Warriors (13-5).

Walton, which won its first Midstate Athletic Conference division title this year, also finished with a school-record 13 victories, Hoover-Daye said.

"I told the girls after the game they have to remember everything they accomplished," she said. "But it's tough to end on a game like that."
