Hartwick downs Binghamton, 2-1

Hartwick College scored twice in the first half and held off visiting Binghamton University, 2-1, Tuesday in a non-conference men's soccer match Tuesday.

The Hawks (9-4-2) are unbeaten over their last 11 matches and snapped a four-match winless skid against the Bearcats (9-8-1).

Two goals 16 minutes apart staked the Hawks to a 2-0 lead.

Sophomore Patrick Thompson opened the scoring at the 19:32 mark of the first half. It started with a passing combination between sophomore Nick Roydhouse and freshman Konrad Anderson on the right side. Thompson then scored his first college goal, beating BU goalie Jason Stenta.

Hartwick benefited from an own goal to make it 2-0. Reserve Simon Greatwich penetrated the left side of the box and attempted a cross. A BU defender tried to clear it but re-directed the ball into the net.

BU's Yusuf Yusuf then assisted on Kyle Manscuk's header that beat Hartwick goalie Jeremy Vuolo with 37 minutes left.

Hartwick held a 19-7 advantage in shots, including 13-3 in the second half.

The Hawks travel to top-ranked Akron (16-0, 5-0 MAC) on Saturday.

Penn State Berks 3, Cobleskill 1

Ariel Fuentes scored twice in the first half to lead fourth-seeded Penn State Berks to a North Eastern Athletic Conference playoff victory over No. 5 SUNY Cobleskill.

The visiting Fighting Tigers finished at 8-10.

Berks (14-5) will face top-seeded Penn State Harrisburg in NEAC semifinal Saturday.

Fuentas opened the scoring on a rebound after Alex Volovar's direct kick hit the crossbar. She made it 2-0, when ran onto a pass from Briana Woods on the left side and scored.

Brooke Kern scored just before halftime to make it 3-0.

Kristen Raina scored for Cobleskill in the second half. Mady Swartz assisted on the goal.

Delhi 72, Corning 59

Jamal Little scored game-high 20 points and had eight rebounds to lead SUNY Delhi to a non-conference road victory.

Freshman Travon Smith had his second double-double for the Broncos, with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Jeremey Scharborough had a team-high 15 points for Corning (0-1), which pulled to 55-50 with five minutes left.

Tavarus Stevens contributed 17 points for Delhi.

Spencer Bonneau had 11 points for the Broncos (2-0), who'll play Alfred at 5 p.m. Saturday in the Monroe Community College Classic.

Delhi (0-2) will play Word of Life at 4 p.m. Saturday in the opening round of the Bronco Classic. Community College of Philadelphia will play Finger Lakes at 2 p.m. Saturday in the other first-round game.

Oneonta 3, Union 1

Freshman Brittany Calvello had 41 assists and eight digs for visiting Oneonta in a 25-21, 25-22, 22-25, 25-17 non-conference victory.

Freshman Meghan Devlin contributed nine kills and six blocks for the Red Dragons, who also received 17 kills from freshman Kacy Boburka.

Jess Zerega had 17 digs and three kills for Oneonta (18-18), which will face Brockport at 2 p.m. Thursday in the opening round of the SUNYAC Championship tournament at New Paltz.

Koreman, Tomaino recognized

Senior wide receiver Noah Koreman senior defensive tackle Ben Tomaino (Oneonta High), who each earned Empire 8 Conference honors for Hartwick College on Sunday, grabbed additional honors from the ECAC and d3football.com.

Koreman and Tomaino swept the ECAC Division III Northwest weekly awards, with Koreman being named Offensive Player of the Week and Tomaino earning Defensive Player of the Week. Tomaino was also selected for the d3football.com National Team of the Week.

Koreman caught five passes for 139 yards and three touchdowns Saturday in Hartwick's 33-27 victory over Utica College. Koreman ranks sixth nationally among Division III players, averaging 127 yards.

Tomaino had 13 tackles, seven solo Saturday, adding four sacks and three tackles for loss, including a sack on fourth down which was Utica's final offensive play. Tomaino is tied for 7th in sacks in Division III this season with nine.

NEAC selects Cobleskill athlete

SUNY Cobleskill sophomore Abigail Vanderveen earned North Eastern Athletic Conference Player of the Week honors for volleyball.

Vanderveen averaged 2.5 kills, 1.5 blocks and four points per game in Cobleskill tri-meet at Hartwick on Saturday.

Cobleskill (10-13) is seeded seventh for the NEAC Tournament. It opens against 10th-seeded Penn State Abington (1-23) at 3 p.m. Friday.
