Bainbridge-Guilford senior Chris Burnett won the Class D boys title Thursday during the Section Four Cross Country Championships at Chenango Valley State Park.
Burnett covered the 5-kilometer course in 16 minutes, 35.9 seconds for B-G, which competed as an incomplete team. Burnett, who finished third last season in 17:03, qualified for the Nov. 14 State Championships at SUNY Plattsburgh, along with fellow seniors Justin Osorio of Edmeston and Jesse Hamway of Oneonta High.
Osorio placed fourth in the Class D boys race in 17:43.1 for the Panthers, who also fielded an incomplete team. Spencer-Van Etten won the Class D team title with 40 points. Delhi finished third among the six scoring teams with 74 points.
Hamway placed sixth in the Class B boys race in 17:21, 32 seconds behind winner Mike Buchanan of team champion Windsor. OHS coach Dan Forbes said all members of the winning team in each class qualify for states, along with the top five runners not affiliated with the championship squad. Minus Buchanan and Windsor teammate David Bates (third, 17:03.4), Hamway had the fourth-best time in Class B.
"He just ran a steady race," Forbes said of Hamway, who overcame a rolled left ankle at the beginning of the season to qualify for states for the first time. "He was probably in the six or seven spot the whole race, but the last mile, he picked up two spots right at the end."
Hamway finished 36th in 19:54 at last year's sectional championships, when former OHS teammate Nick Madison qualified for states. Madison, who runs for Oneonta State, placed 15th at the state meet last season after winning the Section Four Class A title.
The Black Knights won the Class B sectional crown with 38 points. OHS finished fifth out of seven Class B teams with 125 points.
Delhi's Gabriella Rollo and Walton's Kristine Reed qualified for the girls state finals. Edison's Sarah Palmer won the Class D race in 20:24 for team champion Thomas A. Edison, which had 36 points to beat runner-up Delhi by 11.
Rollo placed fifth in 21:02 and Reed finished sixth in 21:13.4. Each moved up one spot in qualifying for states as Palmer was the only Edison runner in the top six.
Kim Scofield (16, 22:14) and Fable Booker (18, 22:19) paced Oneonta's girls, who had 122 points to finish fifth out of six Class B teams. Owego and Maine-Endwell tied in the Class B team scoring with 44 points. Forbes said Owego won the team title, though, because the Indians' sixth-place runner finished higher that Maine-Endwell's.
