O-State men open with win over Cobleskill

Staff Report

Brian Hooks hit three three-pointers and scored a team-high 15 points Saturday to lead four double-digit scorers for Oneonta State, which earned a 79-68 men's basketball victory over visiting SUNY Cobleskill in the season opener for both teams.

Ryan Morin contributed 14 points, Maurice Lane has 12 and Michael Grimes scored 11 for the Red Dragons, who took a 38-29 lead into halftime and went up by 21 during the second half.

Brian Beckford grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds and led Oneonta with four assists.

Taiquan Newkirk paced Cobleskill with a game-best 20 points and 10 rebounds. Newkirk, a center, received athlete of the week honors from the Fighting Tigers, who visit Medaille at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

O-State hosts Hartwick at 8 p.m. Tuesday.

South Kortright graduate Jessica Laing helped visiting Cortland to victory in the season opener for both teams with 16 points and a game-high 13 rebounds Saturday.

Laing, The Daily Star Player of the Year in 2006, went 4-for-8 from the field and 8-for-9 from the free throw line for the Red Dragons, who built a 43-20 lead by halftime.

Reserve Tiffany McLaughlin shot 9-for-12 from the floor en route to a game-high 20 points for Cortland, which answered Lauren Ploof's opening basket with 14 straight points. Jennifer Patten (Bainbridge-Guilford) scored eight points for the Red Dragons, who finished with a 53-30 edge in rebounds and scored 32 points off 24 Hartwick turnovers.

Krystle Crouse paced the Hawks with 12 points and eight rebounds. Crouse finished 4-for-4 from the floor and 4-for-5 from the line. Kara Foro and Fritzi Flores scored 10 points apiece for the Hawks. The two also combined for five three-pointers, with three coming from Flores.

The Hawks visit Oneonta State at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

NCAA Atlantic Regionals

Oneonta State junior Nick Pampena earned all-region honors after finishing in the top 35 at the NCAA Division III Atlantic Regionals on Saturday at St. Lawrence.

Pampena completed the sloppy, 8-kilometer course in 26:35 to place 28th and earn the program's second all-region honor as he joined 2008 graduate Alex Grout. Pampena helped the Red Dragons amass 346 points for their best Atlantic Regionals finish as they placed 11th out of 34 teams.

Senior Marty Nicholson finished 48th (27:06) and Oneonta High graduate Tim Greenberg, a sophomore, placed 69th (27:32).

Celia Alterio paced O-State's women, finishing the 6K in 25:24 to place 73rd. Margaret Conlon crossed in 26:13 (105th) for the Red Dragons, who placed 22nd out of 30 teams with 618 points.

Hartwick's women finished three spots behind Oneonta with 727 points. Kim Negrich placed 107th (26:19) and Gilbertsville-Mount Upton graduate Gabby Dello was 127th (26:45).

John Reese Duals

Devan Witman, Mike Hamilton and Kris Stafford (Bainbridge-Guilford) went undefeated Saturday during the John Reese Duals at Wikes University.

Witman won three matches by technical fall, outscoring his 149-pound opponents, 52-0. He helped Oneonta to a 32-7 defeat of Scranton and a 32-7 win over Baldwin-Wallace. Witman also scored in the Red Dragons' 20-15 loss to Centenary, but he did not wrestle in a 27-10 loss to King's.

Hamilton earned a pin against Scranton and a decision against Baldwin-Wallace at 174 pounds.

Stafford won at 184 pounds by decision against King's and by major decision against Centenary, the latter giving O-State a 15-14 lead with two matches to go. The Red Dragons lost both.

Herkimer Invitational

Delhi swept the team titles Saturday at the Herkimer Invitational.

Chad Snyder won the 1-meter dive (233.7 points) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:32.55) and also contributed to victories in the 200 medley (2:13.72) and 200 free (1:50.74) relays as Delhi's men scored 271 points. SUNYIT finished second with 267 and Herkimer rounded out the three-team invitational with 112.

Tessa Farrar, Jacqui Yoshimoto and Sarah Wood placed first in two events apiece for Delhi's women, who won with 350 points. Herkimer placed second at 174 and SUNYIT scored 55. Farrar won the 50 free (27.64) and the 100 butterfly (1:11.31), the latter one-hundreth of a second off the team record set by Julie Halpin in 2005.

Joseph Farrel won four events to help Oneonta to a 195-72 victory at Utica on Saturday. The Red Dragons' women also won, 193-88, behind two individual victories apiece for Caitlyn Maloney and Michele Sano.

Farrel placed first in four freestyle events (50 in 23.54; 100 in 52.29; 200 in 1:50.15; 500 in 5:16.33). Chris Johnson contributed a win in the 1,000 free (11:19.74) and victories in the 100 (1:01.59) and 200 (2:21.18) backstrokes.

O-State's Mike Martinez and Bruce Wemple swept the diving and butterfly events, respectively.

Maloney won the 200 (2:08.51) and 500 (5:42.56) frees, and Sano touched first in the 100 (1:05.83) and 200 (2:24.14) backstrokes.

O-State will compete this weekend in the North Country Invitational at Potsdam.
