Redskins ride seniors to season-opening win

Staff Report

Ryan Davine scored a varsity-high 22 points and Brad Ashford contributed 16 as the Cooperstown boys basketball team opened its season Friday with a 54-37 victory over Fort Plain in the opening round of the Anton Remy Tournament at Milford.

Senior point guard Davine hit three three-pointers en route to a game-high scoring performance for the Redskins, who jumped to a 12-3 lead after one quarter. Senior forward Ashford scored 12 points in the third quarter, when Cooperstown outscored Fort Plain, 20-7, to extend its lead to 45-27.

"Brad took it to the basket really strong in the third quarter," Cooperstown coach Dave Bertram said. "We had a lot of steals in transition, and he was the beneficiary."

Chris Gattman paced Fort Plain with 14 points.

The Redskins meet Family School in the tournament championship game at 7 p.m. Saturday. Family School downed Milford, 57-29, in Friday's other first-round game.

Milford and Fort Plain play in the consolation game at 5:30 p.m. Saturday.

Brian Edelstein scored a game-high 12 points, but Milford fell in the first round of its Anton Remy Tournament.

Wildcats coach Frank Spurchise cited a height advantage for Family School as the key to its victory.

"They have three big kids," he said of Family School's Will Martel, Chris Robinson and Chal Muhammad, who each stand about 6-foot-3 and scored 10 points apiece Friday. "We just didn't match up well with them. Our biggest kid (Andrew Yerdon) is 6-1. We're going to have that problem this year _ trying to deal with that size."

Family School limited Edelstein to two field goals, but he finished 8-for-10 from the free throw line en route to the Wildcats' only double-digit scoring effort.
