November 24, 2008 04:00 am Milford graduate Shannon Weir scored a game-high 19 points to help Oneonta State earn the Hunter College Tournament title with a 60-51 women's basketball victory over the host school on Saturday night. All-tournament selection Sara Chrystie contributed 12 points for the Red Dragons (3-0). Trailing, 17-14, midway through the opening half, the Red Dragons used a 16-3 run _ with seven points coming from Weir _ to open a 30-20 lead. O-State led, 35-27, at halftime and led by as many as 13 points in the second half. The Hawks (1-1) closed to within three points with about 10 minutes left but could get no closer. Sophomore Rebecca Bucci (nine points, nine rebounds) earned MVP honors for the Red Dragons. O-State travels the Austin College Tournament this weekend. Oneonta meets Southwestern University at 3 p.m. Friday in the opening round. Pruchansky went 6-for-7 from three-point range for the Hawks (2-2). Katie Caddell scored 11 points and was named to the all-tournament team. Hartwick led, 31-28, at halftime, but went on a 25-8 run over the first 10 minutes of the second half to pull away. The Hawks received 40 points scoring off their bench, compared to 11 for Johnson State. Hartwick also had a 45-31 advantage in rebounds. Kara Foro and Jessica Butera each scored eight points for Hartwick, which visits Union at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Stafford, the third seed, pinned Cortland's George Dobrovosky in 2 minutes, 24 seconds and beat Southern Maine's Jesse Rayworth, 13-2, in the quarterfinals. Stafford then beat No. 2 Larry Loomis (Worcester Polytechnic Institute), 6-1, to advance to the championship. Top-seeded Corey Barber of Cortland had to medically forfeit the final, giving Stafford the title. O-State finished in third place at the 11-team tournament with 99 points. Cortland won with 157.5, followed by The College of New Jersey (128.5). Oneonta had eight wrestlers place. Mike Hamilton took third for the Red Dragons at 174 pounds. Devan Witman (149), Derek Conant (125) and Mike Diorio (197) each placed fifth for O-State. Kevin Gregory (285) and Wala Canario (184) each placed sixth. Freshman Jimmy Neal (165) also placed sixth. The eighth-seed, Neal upset top-seeded Justin Boniatatus (The College of New Jersey), 9-6, in sudden-victory overtime in the quarterfinals. Bonitatus entered the tournament ranked fourth in NCAA Division III. Delhi graduate Jason Wake, third-seeded for Rochester Institute of Technology at 165, placed fifth. Souther Maine's Steve Valastro (141) earned outstanding wrestler honors and Niagara CC's Mike Gresh (157) received the most falls award. O-State is in the Petrofes Tournament at Messiah on Dec. 5-6. {"HeadlineLight14"/}Cross Country NJCAA Half-Marathon SUNY Delhi's Chris Mason placed fourth as the Broncos finished ninth at the NJCAA Half-Marathon Championships on Saturday at Johnson County CC on Overland Park, Kan. Mason, who earned All-American honors, finished the 13.1-mile race in 1 hour, 11 minutes, 26 seconds to break the NJCAA Division II, Region III and school records. Mason also earned Coaches Association All-American honors for being one of the top six Americans to finish. Matt Conant held the previous school record of 1:12:58, set in 2006. Iowa Central's Joshua Sawe won in 1:09:47. Tim Flynn finished 33rd (1:18:09) and Jon Tuttle 47th (1:20:56) for the Broncos, who scored 79 points. South Plains won with 14 points. The Hawks scored 26 points to tie with Hamilton, one point ahead of Binghamton. Skidmore won with 47 points. Morrisville (38) placed second and Cornell (36) third. Segnar won the intermediate equitation over fences event. Suite placed first in the advanced walk trot canter equitation. Ashley Brinkman won twice for the women's team, winning the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events. Erin Gray placed second in the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:09.16) and Stephanie Ha second in the 200 individual medley (2:16.07). Ha also placed third in the 200 butterfly (2:18.07). Michael Phillips led the men's team with two victories. Phillips won the 200 individual medley (2:02.23) and the 200 breaststroke (2:13.59). Kevin Milkovich won the 200 butterfly (2:01.52) and placed second in the 1,000 freestyle (10:16.21) and third in the 500 freestyle (4:59.90). Steve VanDuzer placed second in the 50 free (22:42) for the Hawks, who are in the Don Richards Invitational at Rochester Institute of Technology from Dec. 5-7. North Country Invitational Caitlin Maloney won the 200-yard individual medley (2:23.37) and the 400 IM (5:05.78) as O-State's women won a six-team event at Potsdam. The Red Dragons scored 639 points, beating Clarkson by 108. Lauren Maietta won the 1,650 freestyle (19:37.68) and Michelle Sano the 100 backstroke (1:03.84) for O-State. Hartwick's two North Atlantic Region second-team selections were among nine Empire 8 players honored. This past season, Murphy led Hartwick (7-11) in assists with six and Barton had two goals and two assists. Both players received first-team honors from the E8.
