OHS girls open with 71-35 rout

Staff Report

Madie Harlem scored a game-high 21 points Wednesday, leading the Oneonta High girls basketball team to a 71-35 season-opening rout of visiting Unatego in the first round of the Anthony C. Drago Tournament.

Harlem hit 10 shots from the floor for the Jackets, who jumped to a 24-5 lead after one quarter. Sienna Wisse contributed 16 points, on five field goals and 5-for-6 shooting from the foul line.

"Madie's been our high scorer for two years," said OHS coach Bob Zeh, whose team won the Section Four Class A championship last season. "I think this is going to be a breakout year for (sophomore) Wisse, too, because this is her third year on the varsity."

Lesley Harlem, Madie's younger sister, had nine points and Meredith Ridgway finished with eight points and six rebounds. Unatego held Val Ridgway scoreless, but she grabbed nine rebounds and blocked three shots.

Colleen O'Hara had 18 points for Unatego, which suited up seven of its eight roster members for the Drago as Stephanie Havens is out with an injury.

OHS plays Niskayuna in the Drago championship game at 8 p.m. Saturday. Unatego will meet Gloversville in the consolation at 6:15 p.m. Saturday.

Niskayuna topped Gloversville, 68-48, in the other Drago opener Wednesday.

"They've got a nice club," Zeh said of Niskayuna, which fell, 56-37, to OHS in last season's Drago final. "They have three kids who have played for two or three years. It should be a good game and a good matchup for us."
