Kyle Ray scored 17 points and seven rebounds, and Jeff Fazio had eight points and 10 rebounds as Unatego beat Afton, 58-38, in the first round of the Deposit Lumberjack Tournament on Friday night.
Alex Hendrickson scored 15 points, including four three-pointers, for the Spartans (1-0), who meet Susquehanna (Pa.) at 7 p.m. Saturday in the championship. Hendrickson also had five assists and four steals.
Kyle Falkenmeyer also scored 15 points for Unatego, which switched from zone to man-to-man in the first quarter.
"We didn't have the tenacity I was looking for," Unatego coach Jim Knight said.
Bryant Winans led Afton with 19 points. The Crimson Knights play Deposit in the tournament's consolation game.

Mike Iacono had 15 points and six steals and Windham used an 11-4 overtime period to pull away in the opening round of the Schenevus Tip-Off Tournament.
Justin Filippone, a 6-foot-5 center, scored four of his 10 points in overtime. Andrew Alberti and Zhenya Doolan had 12 points apiece for the Warriors (1-1). Alberti also had eight steals.
"We kept the press on for most of the second half and overtime and picked up a bunch of steals," Windham coach Nate Hoyt said. "When we got to overtime, we didn't let down. We picked up the defensive energy and put it away."
Windham plays Worcester in the championship at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

Nelson also had seven steals and five rebounds for the Wolverines (2-1). Toby Stay contributed 18 points and six steals for Worcester, which used a 26-10 second quarter to pull away.

Mason Wyman scored 16 points and Raffi Perry 15 to lead visiting Unadilla Valley in the opening round of the Sherburne-Earlville Tip-Off Tournament.
The Storm trailed, 10-8, after the first quarter, but Wyman scored six points in the second quarter as Unadilla Valley outscored the Marauders, 16-7, to take the lead.
"In the first quarter we had first-game jitters," UV coach Matt Osborne said. "Then we put on some full-court pressure and got some turnovers and easy buckets."
Darin Garcia had eight points and nine rebounds for the Storm (1-0), who plays Westhill at 7:45 p.m. Saturday in the championship.
