---- — Unatego practices open Monday

Unatego will start varsity practices for the fall sports season Monday.

Varsity football will practice from 8 a.m.-noon at Unatego, which also will host the opening practices for varsity girls soccer (8-11 a.m.) and varsity volleyball (9-11 a.m.).

The first varsity boys soccer practice will run from 8-11 a.m. at Otego Elementary.

Modified practices start Aug. 26, with boys soccer from 3-5 p.m. at Unadilla Elementary; volleyball from 4-7 p.m. at Unatego; girls soccer from 5-7 p.m. at Otego Elementary; and football from 5-7:30 p.m. at Unatego.

Atchinson Cup set for Aug. 24-25

The Oneonta Country Club will host the Otsego County Amateur Golf Tournament from Aug. 24-25.

Known as the Atchinson Cup, the Otsego County Amateur is a 36-hole competition featuring championship and net flights that will be determined by handicaps.

There will be 10 players per flight for the tournament, which is open to all Otsego County residents and non-residents who are members of Otsego County golf courses.

Entry fee is $60.

Youth football sign-ups Aug. 26

Oneonta Youth Football will hold sign-ups, check-in and equipment distribution Aug. 26 at the 6th Ward Booster Club Field on Scramling Ave., which is across from the Oneonta Boys and Girls Club.

Sign-ups and check-ins for players ages 8-10 will run from 5:15-6:15 p.m., followed by the same for players ages 11-12 from 6:15-7:15 p.m.

Players must be age 8 by Dec. 1 and cannot turn 13 before Sept. 1 to participate. Twelve-year-olds in grades 7 or higher are not eligible.

A copy of each player’s birth certificate and a $25 insurance fee is required. For more information, call Jason Neer at 607-353-7130.

<\Bz18>Golf tournament set for Aug. 28

The fourth annual NOT Going Back-to-School Golf Tournament, sponsored by the Otsego and Delaware County Retired Teachers’ Associations, will begin with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start Aug. 28 at Colonial Ridge Golf in Laurens.

Cost to enter the captain-and-crew tournament is $40 and includes 18 holes, cart, prizes and a Brooks’ House of BBQ lunch. Cost for Colonial Ridge members is $30. Non-golfers may have lunch for $12.

The tournament is limited to the first 18 teams that register. Golfers may enter as individuals and will be placed on teams.

<\Bz18>Hall event to feature Fingers

Rollie Fingers will be the featured guest during a special Voices of the Game program at 10 a.m. Sept. 2 at the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown.

Fingers, a 1992 Hall of Fame inductee who finished his career with 341 saves, will be in Cooperstown that week for the Otesaga Hotel Seniors Open Pro-Am.

Tickets for the one-hour roundtable program cost $10 for adults and $5 for children under 12. Tickets may be reserved by Hall members from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. starting Monday by calling 607-547-0397. Remaining tickets, if any, will go on sale to the general public Aug. 26.

<\Bz18>Fingers to host Seniors Open

National Baseball Hall of Fame pitcher Rollie Fingers will serve as celebrity host for the 31st annual Otesaga Hotel Seniors Open and Pro-Am Golf Tournament, which runs Sept. 3-6 at the Leatherstocking Golf Course in Cooperstown.

Fingers will participate in the Sept. 3 Pro-Am, which begins with an 11:30 a.m. shotgun start. Fingers also will speak at the fundraiser dinner later that day.

Proceeds from the Pro-Am will benefit Pathfinder Village, a residential community in Edmeston dedicated to children and adults with Down syndrome and other developmental disabilities. Proceeds also will benefit the Hall’s educational programs.

The Seniors Open follows Sept. 4-6 and will feature close to 100 of the top senior professionals in the country. Tom Eubank of Ellijay, Ga., shot a tournament record-tying 64 in the final round to win the 2012 Seniors Open.

The annual SUNY Oneonta Baseball Fall High School Clinic will begin at 9 a.m. Sept. 8 at Red Dragon Baseball Field.

Registration runs from 8-9 a.m. Sept. 8. Entry fee is $75 and may be paid on the day of the clinic or by filling out a registration form and mailing it to SUNY Oneonta, Chase PE Building 102, Oneonta, NY 13820.

Each camper will receive a T-shirt and lunch. The camp is open to high school-aged players who’ll graduate between 2014-17.

The morning session will focus on hitting and position instruction. A live game will be played in the afternoon.

Oneonta State’s athletics department will host its sixth annual “Dining for Champions” on Sept. 14 in the Hunt Union Ballroom.

The event will begin at 5:30 p.m. with a cocktail reception and silent auction. Dinner follows at 7 p.m.

All proceeds will support student-athlete travel initiatives and facility enhancements. The event has raised more than $90,000 over its first five years.

Norwich will host an inaugural 5K run/walk to support the St. Baldrick’s Foundation at 9 a.m. Sept. 28 at East Park.

Registration is open on St. Baldrick’s website, www.stbaldricks.org/events/2013Norwich5K.

Pre-registration is $20 for adults and $15 for students. Registration on the day of the event will be $25 for adults and $20 for students.

The top three men and women in the adult (18-and-older), student (17-and-under) and senior (50-and-older) categories will receive awards for the 5K run. The top three men and women in the 5K walk also will receive awards.

The Boys of Fall Football League is seeking teams to join its full-contact league for the 2013 season.

The Tri-Valley Colts and the Richfield Indians play in the league, which started in 2011 and held its first season in 2012. Players ages 8-18 are eligible to participate.
