OHS grad an All-American in D-II high jump

Oneonta High graduate Christy O’Connor earned All-America status in the high jump during the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships on March 9 at Birmingham, Ala.

O’Connor, a sophomore at East Stroudsburg, cleared every height through 5-foot-7 without a miss. She then cleared 5-8 on her third and final attempt to secure sixth place.

Two weeks earlier, O’Connor won the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference title by clearing 5-7 ¾.

O’Connor became the fifth ESU All-American in the high jump.

She twice placed in the outdoor state meet for OHS.

Mike Calkins

Oneonta High graduate Calkins has made four appearances for the University of Tampa’s baseball team, which is ranked third nationally in Division II.

Calkins, a freshman left-hander, is 0-1 with a 5.87 ERA. He’s allowed five runs _ all earned _ on 11 hits over 7 2/3 innings. He’s struck out six and walked four.

Tampa is 24-4.

Caleb Edmonds

Liberty University junior Edmonds (Cooperstown) placed fifth in the 1,500 meters during the Shamrock Invitational on March 16 at Coastal Carolina.

Edmonds finished in 3 minutes, 59.18 seconds.

Trevor Franklin

Unadilla Valley graduate Franklin’s bid for a third straight NCAA Division II wrestling title ended March 8 at Birmingham, Ala., with an 8-7 opening-round loss to Zachary Hale of Anderson University.

Franklin lost both of his matches at 133 pounds in the tournament, ending his senior season with a 14-7 record.

Last season, Franklin capped a 28-0 season with a 3-2 win over Andrew Pokorney in the 133-pound D-II title match. He was named the D-II wrestler of the year following his junior season.

As a sophomore, Franklin beat Augustana’s Alex Meger, 3-0, to win the 125-pound national title.

Franklin won a state championship at 96 pounds for UV in 2004.

Alex and Ian Van Cott

The Unadilla twins have helped Tulane’s Division I tennis team to a 11-4 record during their freshmen seasons.

On Sunday, Ian Van Cott teamed with Joe Young for an 8-2 third doubles victory over Cal Poly’s Naveen Beasley and Derek Klein in helping the Green Wave to a 4-3 win.

Alex Van Cott and teammate Rodrigo Rappaccioli played to a 7-all tie with Marco Commuzo and Matt Thompson.

On the season, Alex is 15-11 in singles and 11-8 in doubles. Ian is 9-9 in singles and 13-4 in doubles.

Jessie Winans

Afton graduate Winans, a junior shortstop, hit a walk-off, two-run home run Saturday night to lift host Coastal Carolina to a 6-4 Big South Conference softball victory over Campbell.

Winans’ drive to center with one out in the seventh inning was her second home run of the season.

A five-time Daily Star Player of the Year in softball, Winans is hitting .111 this season with seven hits in 63 at-bats. She has two doubles, six RBIs and 11 runs.

Coastal Carolina is 18-12 overall and 5-1 in the Big South Conference.
