Hughes' six goals not enough as Wick falls

Harry Hughes scored six goals Tuesday, but Hartwick College dropped a non-conference men’s lacrosse game, 14-8, to host Castleton State.

The Hawks fell to 4-3 on the season while the Spartans moved to 4-2. The teams combined to commit 29 penalties Tuesday.

Castleton scored the first two goals before Hughes pulled Hartwick to 2-1 with 1 minute, 43 seconds left in the opening quarter. Teammate Mike Vaglica scored 41 seconds into the second period to tie the score, but the Spartans followed with a 6-0 run for an 8-2 halftime lead. Hartwick committed seven penalties in the second quarter.

Vaglica also had two assists for the Hawks, who received six saves from starting goalie Carl Lengel.

Zach Davidson finished with four goals and five assists for the Spartans, who got 14 saves from Peter Latulippe.

Hartwick opens Empire 8 Conference play at 1 p.m. Saturday, when they visit St. John Fisher.

Delhi 14, Broome 6

David Fernandes had four goals and an assist to lead visiting SUNY Delhi to a non-conference victory Monday night at Binghamton Alumni Stadium.

The Broncos (4-2), who are ranked seventh among NJCAA teams, jumped to leads of 5-1 after one quarter and 9-2 at halftime.

James Massett and Paul Hylan each scored two goals for Delhi, which received one goal and one assist apiece from Cabot Noyce, Jordan Owen, and Colby Treat.

Matt Sialiano and Wayne Van Valkenburgh made five and four saves, respectively, for Delhi.

Jack Felter had three goals and an assist for the Hornets (2-3), who received 23 saves from Tyler Pickett.

Delhi held advantages in shots, 53-22; groundballs, 66-21; and face-offs won, 16-7.

BASEBALL

St. Joseph’s 4, O-State 0

Oneonta State lost a non-conference game at St. Joseph’s. No information was available at press time.

The Red Dragons (3-10) visit Montclair State today.

SOFTBALL

Cobleskill swept

SUNY Cobleskill lost both ends of a doubleheader at Skidmore College, 2-1 and 10-1, to fall to 2-4 this season.

Julia Lull doubled in Kelsey Dezalia during the fourth inning to give the Fighting Tigers a 1-0 lead in the opener. Skidmore countered with two unearned runs in the fifth for the final margin. Brianne Gray (0-3) suffered the pitching loss despite allowing five hits in six innings.

The Thoroughbreds (6-10) allowed one unearned run in the second game. They scored six times in the fourth inning to make it 10-1.

O-State falls twice

Oneonta State dropped two games during its spring trip to the National Training Center in Clermont, Fla., following a 5-2 loss to Loras College with a 2-1 setback against Carroll University.

No other information was available on the games at press time.

The Red Dragons end their Florida trip today with games against Carleton and Houghton.

MEN’S TENNIS

Dragons fall to 0-2

Oneonta State lost the first match of its spring trip to Hilton Head, S.C., as the Red Dragons fell, 5-4, to Virginia Wesleyan College. No other information was available at press time.

O-State continues its trip Thursday against the University of Scranton.

WOMEN’S TENNIS
