Spence shares top spot at open

Cooperstown native Scott Spence has company.



Former Oneonta High golfer Spence shot a 2- over-par 73 Thursday at the Leatherstocking Golf Course in Cooperstown and shares the lead after the second day of the 25th annual Otesaga Hotel Seniors Open.



First-round leader Spence, who opened with a 65 Wednesday, is tied with Don Brigham of Jersey City, N.J. at 4-underpar 138 in the $100,000 p r o f e s s i o n - al seniors tournament.



Brigham shot his second straight round of 69 Thursday to catch Spence, a resident of Portsmouth, N.H. Defending champion Bobby Heins (Purchase), Edward Whitman (Blairstown, N.J.) and Kevin Morris (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) are one stroke back entering today’s final round.



Heins shot a 71 Thursday, when Whitman finished at 69. Morris followed an opening-day 71 with a 68, which marked Thursday’s lowest round.



Fifteen players in the remaining field of 122 are within five strokes of the co-leaders, with 10 of those golfers under par after two rounds. Three players withdrew Wednesday and two more failed to complete their rounds Thursday during the tournament, which features a top prize of $20,000.



Former Philadelphia Phillies third baseman Mike Schmidt, who earned election into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1995, fell 10 strokes behind after shooting 79 in the second round. Schmidt, who shot a 69 Wednesday to earn a piece of fifth place, dropped into a tie for 34th.



Windham Country Club pro Brian Lowe is tied for 54th with a 151 two-day total. Lowe shot a 77 on Thursday.
