O-State softball splits home openers

Oneonta State opened its 2009 home schedule Friday with a SUNY Athletic Conference split against Brockport.

After dropping Friday's opener, 5-2, the Red Dragons rebounded with a 1-0 victory in the second game, despite getting one-hit.

A leadoff walk to junior Laura Nowak in the sixth inning set up Oneonta's run in the second game. Margret Beditz then pinch-ran for Nowak and moved from first to third on a bunt-single by Bethany Truax. Beditz scored on a groundout to second base by junior Iman Newborn for a 1-0 lead.

Freshman pitcher Jessica Bartalsky earned her second shutout this season. She struck out six and scattered five hits in a complete-game victory. Brockport junior Kelly Briscoe took the loss despite striking out seven in her one-hitter.

Jillian Sullivan took the pitching loss in the opener. She struck out three in 5 2/3 innings.

Oneonta High graduate Jamie Llewellyn paced the Red Dragons (7-7, 1-1) in the first game, going 3-for-3 with a triple, a double and an RBI single. Her fifth-inning triple gave senior Llewellyn a program-best 11 in four seasons at O-State.

Ona Halladay led Brockport (10-3, 1-1) with a 3-for-3 effort at the plate.

The Red Dragons host a SUNYAC doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday against Geneseo.
