Delhi’s Sarah Clark and Sidney’s Jilleen Livingston clinched berths in the Section Four Girls Tennis State Qualifiers with a 1-2 finish in singles play Thursday during the Section Four Class C-D Tournament at Bainbridge-Guilford.
Top-seeded Clark topped No. 2 seed Livingston, 6-1, 6-0, in the championship match to cap her 3-0 run Thursday. Livingston was the only player to score a point against Clark, who followed a 6-0, 6-0 quarterfinal win over Sidney’s Brynn Davie with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Hancock’s Megan Hunter – the No. 4 seed – in the semifinals.
The top two finishers in singles and doubles play earned automatic berths to the Section Four State Qualifiers, which run Oct. 26-27 at the Binghamton Tennis Center.
Thursday’s third-place finishers earned an opportunity to challenge the third-place Class A players for spots in the State Qualifiers. Elmira Notre Dame’s Kaley Hoefferle will challenge for a singles berth at the BTC on Oct. 24, when Sidney’s Jilleen Hornbeck and Nicole Rajner will attempt to break into the doubles field.
Third-seeded Hoefferle beat Hunter, 6-2, 6-4, in the singles consolation.
Hornbeck and Rajner were seeded third in doubles play and downed No. 4 Mackenzie Thoma and Meghan Cleary of END, 6-0, 6-2, in their consolation.
END won the team title with 60 points, one in front of Sidney. Chenango Forks placed third at 51 points, followed by Delhi (41) and Hancock (37).
The state championships are scheduled to run Nov. 3-5 in Latham.
