Henderson steals roster spot for Classic

Staff Report

Rickey Henderson will be up and running in Cooperstown on May 25.

Major League Baseball’s all-time leader in runs scored and stolen bases will be one of four Hall of Famers who will compete in the fifth annual Hall of Fame Classic at Doubleday Field, the National Baseball Hall of Fame announced Wednesday.

Inducted in 2009, Henderson will join fellow Hall of Famers Rollie Fingers, Goose Gossage and Phil Niekro — all pitchers — in the Memorial Day Weekend exhibition game.

More than 20 other retired major leaguers will participate in the event, which spent its first four years as a staple of Father’s Day Weekend in Cooperstown.

The Hall announced Wednesday that the teams, which will managed by Bobby Cox and Cito Gaston, will feature Brian Boehringer, Bob Boone, Bret Boone, Bert Campaneris, Doug Creek, Will Clark, John Doherty, Brian Fisher, Cliff Floyd, Jeffery Hammonds, Jim Hannan, Todd Haney, T.J. Mathews, Brian McRae, Desi Relaford and Dmitri Young. The Hall added that the complete rosters for the Classic will be announced by the end of this month.

Henderson finished his 25-year MLB career in 2003 with 2,295 runs and 1,406 stolen bases. He played for nine MLB teams — including the New York Yankees and the New York Mets — during a career that started with the Oakland A’s.

The Classic starts at 2 p.m. May 25, following the Cooperstown Game Day Parade along Main Street at noon and the pre-game hitting contest at 1 p.m.

Tickets for the Classic are on sale and cost $12.50 for first- and third-base seats and $11 for outfield seats. The Hall will offer free admission to the museum May 25 for those affiliated with military organizations who purchase a Classic ticket in advance.

To order tickets, visit the website baseballhall.org or call 1-877-726-9028 and use the access code “MIL.”
