Brieanna Baker combined to strike out 21 batters and Erin Mushtare had three hits in both games as Oneonta High defeated Johnson City, 11-1, and Vestal, 6-4, to win the Union-Endicott Cancer Tournament on Saturday at Vestal.
Baker struck out 11 and walked none, allowing three hits over five innings to lead the Yellowjackets over JC. Mushtare finished 3-for-5 and scored twice, and Brianna Haines and Amy Hait also had three hits against Wildicats. Hayley Dower finished with two hits for the Yellowjackets (8-1), who improved to 7-1 in the Southern Tier Athletic Conference with the win over JC.
Hait’s two-run double in the fifth inning extended OHS’ lad to 6-0.
Against Vestal, Baker struck out 10 and scattered eight hits.
The Yellowjackets took a 6-2 lead by scoring twice in the top of the seventh. Cami Cleaveland had a sacrifice fly to left that scored pinch-runner Miranda Kreger. With two outs, Mushtare hit the second of her two triples _ a drive to right. She scored on a triple to right by Haines.
“She does her best work with two strikes,” OHS coach Randy Brockway said Mushtare, whose six-hit day included two doubles and two triples. “She’s been hitting the ball extremely well. She drives the ball and hits good gap shots all the time.”
Vestal rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh, the last run coming on an RBI double to right-center by losing pitcher Kristen Hidiling. But Baker induced a liner to third that Cami Cleaveland caught for the final out.
Cami Cleaveland went 3-for-3 with three runs and an RBI, and Haines went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
“It seems like Brianna’s bat is coming around for us,” Brockway said of Haines, The Daily Star’s Player of the Year in 2011. “With Erin hitting third and Brianna in the fourth spot, that’s good for us. I think her confidence is back.”
