SUNY Cobleskill senior Marten Peterson (track and field), junior Amanda Bucci (equestrian) and freshman Jacqueline Boyce (track and field) earned SUNY Chancellor’s Student-Athlete Awards for the 2012-13 academic year, the Fighting Tigers announced Wednesday.
The awards recognize academic excellence and outstanding athletic achievement at the Division I, III and NJCAA levels.
A total of 65 student-athletes from across the SUNY system were honored. Cobleskill’s award-winners are part of SUNY’s Independent Campuses NCAA Division III category.
Winners were nominated by their respective athletic directors. Their academic credentials and athletic accomplishments were then reviewed by a panel of athletic directors from across the SUNY system and members of the chancellor’s office.
Peterson earned All-New York State College Track Conference Indoor Team honors in the 800-meter run, placing second at the championships at 1:56.04. He also obtained All-Eastern College Athletic Conference D-III Indoor Team honors in the 1,000, finishing fourth at the championships in 2:31.32.
The captain of Cobleskill’s 2012 NEAC champion men’s cross country team, Peterson has a GPA of 3.69 as a bio-technology major.
Bucci qualified for the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association Zone 2 Region 3 Hunt Seat Championships in the Novice Fences and Novice Flat Events and was one of the team’s top overall scorers in competitive events. The 2012 Fred Bennett Outstanding Female Scholar-Athlete maintains a 3.88 GPA while studying animal science.
Boyce earned All-NYSCTC indoor track honors as part of the Fighting Tigers 3,200 relay team, which placed sixth at the championships and went on to set a program record of 10:02.38 at the ECACs. Also a member of the NEAC champion cross-country team, the health science studies major has a GPA of 3.39.
Oneonta State senior Jimmy van de Veerdonk earned First Team honors from the SUNY Athletic Conference for the third straight men’s lacrosse season, the Red Dragons announced Wednesday.
