O-State picks track standouts as top athletes

Staff Report

Sean Bernstein and Danielle Kennedy earned Athlete of the Year honors for men’s and women’s sports, respectively, during Oneonta State’s athletics banquet Tuesday night.

Senior track sprinter Bernstein became the first male athlete in O-State’s 10-year track history to earn an individual national title, when he won the 200 meters at last spring’s NCAA Division III outdoor track championships. He crossed in a meet record 20.80 seconds. Bernstein also finished runner-up in the 100 in 10.44.

His success continued this season as he placed second in the 60 in the indoor championships.

This past weekend, Bernstein won the 100 (10.54) and the 200 (21.14) at the SUNY Athletic Conference Championships at Cortland. He also and contributed to a 400 relay triumph in a meet record of 41.22.

Junior cross country and track standout Kennedy had breakout seasons. Last fall, she finished third at the conference championship meet, which tied the best female finish for an O-State cross-country runner. It was the second straight year she finished in the top-five at the SUNYAC championship meet.

During the indoor track season, she won a SUNYAC title in the 3,000. She’s also set school records in the 3,000, and the 5,000 indoors, and the 5,000 and 10,000 outdoors.
