Connor Gioffe and Nate Denison provided efficient double-digit scoring efforts Monday, leading the Delhi boys basketball team to a 47-39 defeat of host Oxford in a Midstate Athletic Conference 5-8 Tournament semifinal.

Gioffe went 5-for-10 from the floor en route to a team-best 14 points for the Bulldogs (10-7), who received 13 points on 5-for-8 shooting from Denison.

“They shot very well from the field,” said Delhi coach Warren Kelly, whose team took a 25-18 lead into halftime. “When our two leading scorers shoot that well, it’s a big help.”

Delhi trailed, 13-8, after one quarter but took control by outscoring the Blackhawks, 17-5, in the second period.

“We did a better job in terms of rebounding in the second quarter,” said Kelly, who got eight rebounds overall from Alex Specht. “We spread out the scoring and did a great job of attacking the basket.”

Kevin Davis scored a game-high 19 points for Oxford, which entered the tournament as the sixth seed.

The mild upset gave seventh-seeded Delhi a home game for the MAC 5-8 final as the Bulldogs will host No. 8 seed Harpursville at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday.

The same night, Delhi should learn its seed for the Section Four Class D Tournament.

“There are an awful lot of good Class D teams out there,” said Kelly, whose team traditionally competes at the Class C level during sectionals. “We’re excited for the opportunity to play in the Class D tournament.”

Justin Baxter’s 21 points paced Downsville, which faced a 26-21 deficit at the half.

Harpursville 71, G-MU 44

Devon Dean scored a game-high 21 points as visiting Harpursville won a non-league game.

Jon Andrews contributed 12 points and Peyton Dean finished with 10 for the Hornets, who held a 27-16 lead at halftime.

Nathaniel O’Hara scored 13 points for Gilbertsville-Mount Upton (1-15), which received 12 points from Austin Burnside in its season finale.
