Cobleskill men pull away from Cazenovia


Brandon Smith and Alexis Nunez scored 20 and 19 points, respectively, to lead host SUNY Cobleskill to a 63-47 North Eastern Athletic Conference men’s basketball victory over visiting Cazenovia on Wednesday.

Mike Chapman contributed 14 points, including 8-for-10 from the free throw line, for the Fighting Tigers, who led, 23-19, at halftime. Chapman also had 13 rebounds.

Nunez contributed four assists for Cobleskill (8-12, 7-7).

DeMarcus Bernard had 10 points for Cazenovia (5-16, 3-11).

The Fighting Tigers, who have won five straight, will travel to SUNYIT at 5 p.m. Friday.


Cazenovia 67, Cobleskill 65

The host fighting Tigers rallied from a 10-point halftime deficit to force overtime before falling in a North Eastern Athletic Conference game.

Tracee Schiebel capped her 24-point night by hitting a jumper with 39 seconds left in overtime that tied the score at 65 for the Fighting Tigers.

But Cazenovia’s Kali Davis made a layup as time expired.

Kaena Davenport had 13 points and Samantha Davis finished with 10 for Cobleskill (5-15, 3-9), which will play at SUNYIT on Friday.

Hawks ranked sixth

Hartwick is ranked sixth among NCAA Division III East Region teams.

The NCAA uses the regional rankings in the selection of NCAA tournament field.

Hartwick (18-4) is looking for its second tournament appearance in three seasons. The Hawks are 1-2 against teams ranked in the East Region. They split a pair of games against No. 2 Ithaca College and lost, 67-65, to third-ranked Vassar.

New York University (18-2) is ranked first. Buffalo State and Plattsburgh are ranked fourth and fifth, respectively.

Hartwick has three regular-season games left. Its next game is Tuesday at home against Stevens.
