Laurens boys bump Delhi; Davenport, Milford advance

Mitchell Barra scored a game-high 19 points Tuesday to lead the Laurens boys basketball team to a first-round upset in the Section Four Class D Tournament as the 10th-seeded Leopards downed seventh-seeded host Delhi, 62-46.

Jared Conklin hit three three-pointers en route to 16 points for Laurens (12-6), which took a 29-18 lead into halftime. Laurens also received 11 points from Logan Barra and 10 from Anthony Monaco.

“We had a hard time attacking their defense and they did a nice job at handling our ball pressure,” Delhi coach Warren Kelly said. “They had a balanced attack and a lot of guys were able to score.”

Connor Gioffe paced Midstate Athletic Conference-affiliate Delhi (10-9) with 12 points. Teammate Michael Staples contributed 10 points.

Laurens of the Tri-Valley League will visit second-seeded Davenport at 7 p.m. Friday in a Section Four Class D quarterfinal. Davenport (17-1) shared the Delaware League title with fourth-seeded Gilboa (15-3) this season.

Davenport 64, Franklin 39

Josh Davi scored a game-high 15 points to lead Delaware League co-champion Davenport to a first-round victory in the Section Four Class D Tournament.

Matt Finne finished with 14 points, scoring eight of those in a 22-10 first quarter for the second-seeded Wildcats (17-1). Kyle Moorby contributed all seven of his points in the first period for Davenport, which went on to a 41-19 lead at halftime.

“It was a good team effort,” said Davenport coach Lee Fisher, who received eight rebounds from Kyle Wamsley, seven assists from Corey Hartman and six assists from Finne. “I’m happy with the way the guys put it together tonight.”

Derek Beers scored a team-best 13 points for the 15th-seeded Purple Devils of the Tri-Valley League, who ended their season at 7-9.

Davenport will host a sectional quarterfinal against another T-V team as 10th-seeded Laurens advanced with a 62-46 victory over seventh-seeded Delhi of the Midstate Athletic Conference. The Leopards will visit Davenport at 7 p.m. Friday.
