Matt Anderson finished with a game-high 27 points, including seven three-pointers, to lead eighth-seeded Stamford to a first-round home victory in the Section Four Class D Tournament.
Anderson had 13 points in the second quarter, when the Indians outscored the Delaware League rival Blue Devils, 23-12.
“Margaretville does a good job at doubling down on the block, so it opened up the outside for us,” said Stamford coach Greg O’Connell, who also received 10 points and five blocks from Dustin King.
Stamford’s Glen Cioccari contributed nine points and five assists, and teammates Geoff and Gregg Mattice finished with 13 rebounds apiece.
“A lot of guys contributed in a lot of ways tonight,” O’Connell said.
Cooper Reither and Matt Van Valkenburg each scored 19 points for ninth-seeded Margaretville, who finished the season 12-6. Stamford (13-5) will play at top-seeded Edmeston on Friday in a Section Four Class D quarterfinal. Edmeston (17-1), which had a first-round bye, is coming off its only loss of the season -- a 52-47 setback in overtime against third-seeded Milford in the Tri-Valley League championship game this past Saturday at Oneonta State.
SK 78, Afton 46
Tyler Lamport finished with a game-high 23 points and eight assists to lead sixth-seeded South Kortright to a first-round Section Four Class D Tournament victory at home.
Griff Metzko scored eight of his 16 points in the first quarter, which ended with the Rams ahead, 20-5.
“We forced quite a few turnovers, which led to fastbreak baskets in the first quarter,” said SK coach Bob VanValkenburgh, who recieved 13 points from Dan Nelson and 11 from Ty Magnan. Kyle Hinman paced 11th-seeded Afton of the MAC with 17 points. Darien Heath contributed nine points for the Crimson Knights (7-11), all coming from three-point range.
SK (14-4) will play at third-seeded and reigning Tri-Valley League champion Milford (18-1) on Friday in a Section Four Class D quarterfinal.
