Tori Rockefeller stuffed the stat sheet Thursday, leading undefeated South Kortright to a 68-30 girls basketball victory over Delaware League rival Downsville in the opening round of the Section Four Class D Tournament.
Rockefeller finished with a game-high 20 points, eight assists, seven rebounds, six steals and three three-point field goals for the second-seeded Rams (18-0), who jumped to a 19-5 advantage after one quarter.
Rockefeller had 13 points in the second quarter, when the state’s top-ranked team in Class D outscored Downsville, 27-4, to take a 46-9 lead into halftime.
“Tori had a big second quarter,” SK coach Josh Burroughs said. “She shot the ball well. They left her open on the outside and she hit her shots.”
Lexi DuBois contributed 16 points, 10 rebounds and five steals for the Rams, who received 13 points from Brianna Laing.
Virginia Gilkeson’s 15 points marked the only double-digit scoring effort for 15th-seeded Downsville (9-9), which received three points from team scoring leader Kaileen Townsend. Burroughs credited the defense of Burkley Cole and Kaitlyn Stinson for limiting Townsend, who entered the game averaging roughly 19 points.
“I like the energy we came out with tonight,” said Burroughs, whose co-Delaware League champion Rams will host a sectional quarterfinal against seventh-seeded Cherry Valley-Springfield (13-5) of the Tri-Valley League at 5 p.m. Saturday.
“I don’t know much about them, but I watched them a little in the Hancock game,” Burroughs said of the Patriots’ 57-37 first-round win over the 10th-seeded Wildcats on Wednesday. “Overall, they have a pretty balanced team and they have speed. It’s going to take a total team effort to beat them.”
