Schenevus girls hold off Milford in Class D quarterfinal

(Continued)

The Dragons’ Sierra Bentley answered back on the next play with a three-pointer that gave Schenevus the lead for good at 40-37.

“Schenevus is a good basketball team, a very good basketball team,” Weir said. “Their two guards just got the better of us tonight.”

Bentley finished with 12 points and Sarah Mellor contributed six.

After being held to just four points in the first half, Bentley gave the Dragons their largest lead at 31-21 on a jumper inside the paint to end the third quarter.

Next up for Schenevus (15-4) will be top-seeded Southern Cayuga (17-2), which beat Afton, 72-33, in a quarterfinal Saturday. They’ll play at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Oneonta State.

“We are going in there with our regular game plan,” Walke said of facing the Interscholastic Athletic Conference Small-School champions. “I haven’t seen them play, but we are going to go down and do what we can do against them.”

Milford (14-6) had seven sophomores on this season’s team.

“My kids did not quit tonight,” Weir said. “I am ecstatic about our season this year. They don’t leave anything in the locker room and that’s what it’s all about.”
