Unatego's next opponent will be Sauquoit Valley

The Daily Star

Unatego’s girls found out Wednesday their opponent for a Class C state soccer quarterfinal Saturday and Oneonta High’s girls are closer to knowing their opponent and when they’ll play their Class B quarterfinal.

The Section Four champion Spartans (18-0-1) will play Section Three winner Sauquoit Valley at 1 p.m. Saturday at Fulton High.

SV (17-2-1) defeated Manlius-Pebble Hill, 1-0, Wednesday in the Section Three Class C final.

Unatego is seeking its first state playoff victory. The Spartans’ only other foray into the state playoffs came in 1996, when it lost, 3-0, Syracuse CBA in a state quarterfinal.

This past Friday, Unatego earned a 1-0 win over Elmira Notre Dame in the Section Four Class C title game. The Spartans’ Torri Halaquist scored a first-half goal off an assist from Sarah Mannina.

“We knew we could do it because we had all the right moves going this year,” Halaquist said after Friday’s victory.

The only blemish on the Spartans’ record came in a 0-0 tie with Seton Catholic Central on Oct. 1. SCC lost, 4-0, in overtime to Oneonta in the Section Four Class B final Friday at Greene.

Unatego goalie Robin Foster has 17 shutouts this season. She’s permitted three goals all season.

Following Unatego’s quarterfinal Saturday at Fulton, Section Four Class D champion Franklin (19-1) will play Section Three winner Poland at 3 p.m. in a state quarterfinal.

The Purple Devils (15-2-1) tied Morris, 1-1, in the Section Four final last Saturday at the Wright National Soccer Campus and advanced to states thanks to a 3-2 win a penalty-kick shootout.

The list of potential opponents for the Yellowjackets has narrowed to three.

Ninth-seeded Albertus Magnus and second-seeded Bronxville will play for the Section One championship at 6:30 tonight at Carmel High.

The winner of that game will play a Class B first-round game against Section Nine winner Spackenkill (17-1) at 10 a.m. Saturday at Arlington High.

The Yellowjackets will play the winner of that game in a state quarterfinal.

OHS athletic director Joe Hughes said Wednesday the Yellowjackets’ Class B state quarterfinal likely will be played Tuesday at a Section Four site.

Hughes said it likely would be played on a turf field — perhaps at Greene or in the Binghamton area.

The Yellowjackets (17-2) won their second straight Section Four title Friday with a 4-0 overtime victory against Seton Catholic Central at Greene. Following 80 scoreless minutes of regulation, OHS received goals from Brieanna Baker and Madison Miller in the first overtime before Dani Nicosia and Abby Picinich scored in the second OT.

Last season, OHS played Spackenkill and Bronxville in the state playoffs. Oneonta earned its first state playoff victory since 2004 with a 4-1 victory against Spackenkill in a state first-round game.

The Yellowjackets’ 19-2 season ended with a 1-0 loss to Bronxville, which won the 2010 Class B state title.
