Afton sinks B-G; Gilboa tops Stamford

Staff Report

Afton executed its final offensive play exactly how coach Dick Winans drew it up Thursday night.

But there was a twist.

Coming out of a timeout, the Crimson Knights broke Bainbridge-Guilford’s full-court press and got the basketball to Kyle Hinman on a block for a chance to tie the score. The Bobcats quickly doubled Hinman, who kicked the ball out to a wide-open Darien Heath for a three-pointer that gave Afton’s boys a 46-45 Midstate Athletic Conference victory.

“They were up by two with 12 seconds left, so I just wanted us to get the ball inbounds, break the press and get it to Hinman,” Winans said. “He kicked it out to Darien on the left wing. It was just a straight up three with nobody on him.”

Heath’s basket left 1 second on the clock for B-G, which failed to get a shot off after successfully inbounding the ball.

“He just came back from a bad sprain,” Winans said of junior point guard Heath, who missed Afton’s last game. “So that was good to see.”

Heath finished with 10 points for Afton (3-1), which received 11 points and 11 rebounds from Hinman.

Dylan Moffitt hit three three-pointers en route to a game-high 13 points for the Bobcats, who got 12 points from Lucas Butcher.

Afton, which rallied from a 23-18 halftime deficit, visits Delhi on Wednesday.
