It took Unatego’s wrestlers a little while to get going Wednesday night, but the Spartans didn’t waste much time after that.
After dropping the first four matches of their non-league dual meet against Cooperstown, the Spartans won 10 of the final 11 bouts for a 60-21 victory that pushed their record to 3-0 this season.
Unatego ended eight of those 10 victories with pins in the first period, and the other two came by way of forfeit.
The Hawkeyes jumped to an 18-0 lead with back-to-back forfeits at 99 and 106 pounds, followed by consecutive decisions by Steve Ratliff (113) and Paul LoRusso (120).
Holden Smith then started a string of five straight Unatego pins, winning his 126-pound match over Nate Miller in 1 minute, 36 seconds.
Austin Ryan (132, 30 seconds), Keith Crawford (138, 1:03), Lucas DeJoy (145, 1:00) and Troy Jones (152, 40 seconds) followed with first-period pins as Unatego took a 30-18 lead.
Reece Johnson’s 9-4 decision at 160 capped Cooperstown’s scoring. The Spartans took the next two matches by forfeit, then closed with pins by Marcus Sperry (195, 1:17), Riley Hanrahan (220, 15 seconds) and Ethan Barber (285, 1:07).
Crawford and Sperry, both seniors, earned their first victories in their first season wrestling for Unatego’s varsity squad.
